3 killed in Uttar Pradesh poll violence Lucknow, October 13 It was mainly a clash between the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party in most of the constituencies. Two persons succumbed to their injuries in the Lok Sabha constituency of Mainpuri and one in Atrauli. While Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav’s nephew is contesting in the former, BJP vice-president Kalyan Singh’s daughter-in-law is in the fray in the latter. While the Election Commission admitted receiving a large number of complaints from all the constituencies, the official spokesperson said a final picture would emerge only after reports of the Returning Officers were received on Thursday. Only then a final decision regarding repolling would be taken. Meanwhile, according to the EC, the state reported an average of 56 per cent polling. The highest turnout, 65.69 per cent, was reported at Siddhaur in Barabanki. The lowest, a bare 35 per cent of the voters exercised their vote in Ghaziabad. Sixty per cent polling was reported at Mainpuri where extensive violence and booth capturing were reported despite a record of six observers from the Election Commission. In Mainpuri besides the death of two BSP workers, Anil Singh and another BSP activist, the SP workers had laid siege to the Sarai Mughpur polling booth till late evening, informed BSP leader in the Vidhan Sabha Swami Prasad Maurya. Violence also occurred in polling booths Paliya Nagla Harchandpur, Khadra, Mangna Gapchariyapur and Ilahavash. Violence was also reported from polling booths in Allahabad West, Mujehana, Iglas and Karchana and Baghra. At Atrauli, BJP MLA and son of Kalyan Singh Rajvir Singh had a narrow escape as violence occurred in Atrauli where his wife is the BJP contestant. |
