Rs 20 lakh stolen in Basant Avenue
Tribune lensman attacked by colonisers’ musclemen

Ludhiana, October 13
The much-publicised claims of colonisers of providing security to life and property of the area residents in the Basant Avenue colony, coming up on the outskirts of the city, came crashing down when burglars broke into the site office of the colonisers and decamp with about Rs 20 lakh besides true copies of property deals.

One gets life term for murder
Ludhiana, October 13
Additional Sessions Judge, Inderjit Kaushik has sentenced Jagmail Singh (52) of Jhandey village to life imprisonment on the charge of murdering Jaswinder Singh Bhullar (son of a retired DSP) with his licensed gun, following a land dispute. A fine of Rs 15,000 was also imposed upon the accused.

DC tells cracker dealers to take precautions
Ludhiana, October 13
Deputy Commissioner here, Anurag Verma, today directed wholesale cracker dealers in the district to take necessary precautions while handling explosive substance failing which strong action would be taken against the violators.

Hajis seek more facilities

Protesting against several aspects of the Reserve Bank of India’s amalgamation scheme with regard to the merger of Global Trust Bank with Oriental Bank of Commerce, employees of Oriental Bank today held a dharna in front of the bank’s regional office at Jandu Tower here.

Bad road irks residents
Ludhiana, October 13
Troubled by poor condition of the roads between Labour Colony and the Police Post, which was dug for sewerage work and then left in an improper condition after being filled, the residents of Urban Estate, Dugri, today wrote to the Additional Municipal Commissioner to repair the road.

Woman alleges murder bid
Ludhiana, October 13
The police on Monday registered a case under Sections 307, 498-A and 406 of the IPC on the statement of Ms Harminder Kaur, who lives in Guru Hargobind Nagar, Phagwara, against her husband Manjit Singh and in-laws.

Shops burgled, mobiles worth Rs 2 lakh stolen
Ludhiana, October 13
Burglars broke in two shops near Vishwakarma Chowk and decamped with Rs 1.5 lakh cash and mobile phones worth over Rs 2 lakh. The burglars struck at Ahuja Mobiles and an office-cum-showroom of Airtel company last night.

PSEB official held for graft
Samrala, October 13
Jagjiwan Singh, a revenue accountant (R.A.) of PSEB office, was arrested by Ludhiana Vigilance for taking bribe of Rs 3500. It was found that the R A had taken Rs 3500 as part payment in a case.

Woman held for gambling
Jagraon, October 13
The Dakha police arrested Rano Sharma wife of Gopal Sharma of Link Road, Mullanpur for luring people to invest in number game to multiply their money. The police recovered from her Rs 750 and registered a case under section 13-A, 367 of the Gambling Act.

PNB offers festival bonanza

Punjab National Bank has decided to offer concessions in interest rates, upfront fee and documentation fee under a festival season bonanza to those who avail loans under various retail lending schemes of the bank between October 14 and December 31. Mr Harwant Singh, General Manager of the bank (Punjab zone), said this in a press note here today.

Ramlila starts

The Urban Estate Ramlila Dasehra Committee president Raj Garg and General Secretary Dr Shiv Gupta, stated that Ramlila would be starting from October 13 in Urban Estate, Dugri Sabzi Mandi Ground and Dasehra Mela would be held on October 22, where Mr Malkit Singh Birmi, Chief Parliamentary Secretary would be the chief guest.

The Health Department and the Education Department have joined hands to educate the public about AIDS. The District Health Officer, Dr K.C. Goyal, said the district authorities had coordinated the two departments as part of the sensitisation programme and had held seminars in the district.
