Outsiders rough up councillor inside House
Ludhiana, October 1
The husbands of two women Councillors belonging to the Congress today tried to manhandle Mr Praveen Bansal, leader of the BJP in the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, when he objected to their presence in the House meeting. Mr Bansal had earlier also objected to their presence and urged the Mayor, Mr Nahar Singh Gill to prevent their entry in the House meetings in future.

GNDEC students seek DC’s intervention
Ludhiana, October 1
The strike at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC) has stretched over three weeks. Today, according to a signed statement, students of the GNDEC submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, stating that they had called off the strike after the suspension of Principal RP Singh and Prof J.N. Jha by the SGPC President, Bibi Jagir Kaur, and that they were awaiting her final decision.

Aulakh chosen chief of farm technocrats’ body

Dr R P S Aulakh has been elected as president of the Plant Doctor’s Services Association, elections for which were held here today. The body is a state- level organisation of agricultural technocrats working as agricultural development officers and horticultural development officers in the state departments of agriculture and horticulture.

Police recovers abducted boy
Mandi Gobindgarh, October 1
Schoolboy Danesh Kumar (7), who was kidnapped yesterday, was recovered by the police on the same day. The alleged kidnapper was also nabbed. Danesh Kumar, a student of Sant Pritam Singh Public School, Ambey Majra, was on his way to home after the school when a migrant labourer caught him forcibly, threw his bag and cycle there, carried him to some unknown place. The fellow school mates raised the alarm but the man ran away with the boy.

The Ludhiana city postal division celebrated 150th anniversary here today. A philatelic exhibition was also organised on the occasion which was inaugurated by SP City, RK Jaiswal, while Ms Manisha Bansal, Senior Superintendent, Post Offices, Ludhiana, presided over the function.

Healing touch prayers from October 6
Ludhiana, October 1
Sarb Rog Ka Aukhad Nam mission will organise a five-day camp of healing through prayers from October 6 to October 10 at Model Town Janj Ghar. This was disclosed by Dr Balwant Singh, general secretary of the mission, here today.

One held for illicit distillation
Jagraon, October 1
Head Constable Karamjit Singh during patrolling arrested Malkit Singh alias Keetu of Sherewal while he was making illicit liquor by installing a still and took into possession six litres illicit liquor, 20 kg lahan and the still. The accused has been booked under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act at Sidhwan Bet police station.

Service tax to stay
Ludhiana, October 1
Commissioner Central Excise Ludhiana, PS Purhoti, has said that the service tax was going to stay and more and more services were likely to be brought under its ambit. Delivering a talk here last evening during a ‘Discussion on Changes in Central Excise and Service Tax’, Mr Purhoti said, this was necessary to ensure the continuous growth in the Gross Domestic Product.

Training camp on sugarcane planting 
Ludhiana, October 1
A training camp-cum-seminar was organised by the Jagraon Cooperative Sugar Mills at Jagraon to popularise the ring-pit method of sugarcane planting by nursery system. It was attended by secretaries and chairpersons of all primary multipurpose cooperative societies and progressive farmers of the area. The ring-pit digger was also put on display at demonstration and the participants were told about its working and its advantages.

Token of love from Pak varsity handed over to PAU students

A function was organised in the Pal Auditorium at Punjab Agricultural University in which a memento, which was sent by the students of the University of Agriculture, Faislabad (Pakistan), as a token of love for their Indian friends, was handed over to the students of the university.

35 donate blood at camp

A blood donation camp was organised at Civil Hospital Khanna to celebrate Blood Donation Day today. The camp was inaugurated by SMO Civil Hospital Khanna. More than 35 units of blood were collected. Doctors, paramedical staff and some local residents donated blood.
