Pak subdue India in lacklustre game
Karachi, September 24 Indians looked clueless though they took the lead in the third minute through Arjun Hallapa and the Pakistanis scored two goals in eight minutes later in the first session but that was all they had to show despite their superiority. After surviving a first-minute assault, the Indians countered and earned a penalty corner in the third minute. Dilip Tirkey’s shot was blocked by goalkeeper Salman Akbar but on the rebound unmarked Arjun Hallapa made no mistake in sending the ball into the cage to give his side an unexpected lead. The Pakistanis retaliated with Rehan Butt and Shakeel Abbasi leading the charge from left and right flanks but Indian skipper Dilip Tirkey and young William Xalco frustrated their moves with good anticipation. For Pakistan, who led 2-1 at half-time, the goal scorers were Sohail Abbas and Rehan Butt. The Indians were lucky to have trailed by a goal in the first half as Pakistanis missed three sitters and an equal number of penalty corners. For the visitors, Adrian D’Souza was outstanding under the bar. The young Mumbai goalkeeper foiled Sohail Abbas with a well-anticipated dash before the penalty corner expert could execute his dreaded drag flicks. The Indians, after putting up spirited display in the first 15 minutes, suddenly went into their shell allowing the possession of midfield to their rivals. Pakistanis also did not click well but still made some very incisive moves which rattled the Indians The hosts took 15 minutes to draw parity. They earned their first penalty corner in the 18th minute and Sohail Abbas’s powerful flick saw the ball flying into the net giving no chance to the defenders. Eight minutes later, Rehan Butt made a move from the right but was foiled by Adrian D’Souza. Shabbir latched on to the ball and relayed it back to Rehan who made no mistake in sending the ball home to give his side the lead. This goal turned out to be the winner.

SC to hear Zee’s plea on September 27
New Delhi, September 24 A Bench headed by Chief Justice R.C. Lahoti ordered listing of the matter for hearing on September 27 after Zee’s counsel Harish Salve made a special mention about the TV channel filing a writ petition against the BCCI’s alleged “unilateral” cancellation of the contract as well as a special leave pettion (SLP) against the proceedings in the Bombay High Court on the issue. Zee has sought restoration of the deal on the ground that the contract had become operational once it had paid to the BCCI $ 20 million as advance money after the telecast rights for next four years were given to it. Zee’s counsel Maninder Singh told mediapersons that the domestic channel, in a fresh proposal made to the BCCI, had stated that it was ready to keep the entire ad revenue in separate account subject to audit by an independent agency during pendency of the case. If Zee succeeded in the case, it would be entitled to retain the money and if it failed, the same would go to the BCCI. But it should be allowed to telecast the matches during the India-Australia series pending the adjudication of the case by the apex court, he said. International sports channels ESPN-Star Sports had challenged in the Bombay High Court the award of the contract to Zee but it had to withdraw the petition from there after the BCCI announced the cancellation of the deal during hearing of the matter. |
Windies keen to regain lost pride
London, September 24 Not many had expected the Caribbeans to make it to the final but the team is on a high after their thumping wins over superior opponents and will hope to get the momentum going in the summit clash. The former world champions, who have not won any major event since 1979 and had even failed to make it to the summit clash of this championship since 1998, defeated South Africa and Pakistan in earlier rounds and will be hoping that captain Brian Lara will be fully fit before they clash with the hosts who are in top form themselves. Lara was hit on the neck by a Shoaib Akhtar bouncer in the semifinals against Pakistan but the team management expects him to be fit enough to lead the team at the Oval tomorrow. Though the Caribbeans had pipped England to reach the NatWest Series final earlier this year, they do not have happy memories of their summer here as they were blanked 4-0 in the Test series by the hosts just last month. But West Indies vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan has already started playing the mind game, saying that they will have the psychological advantage due to better performance in one-dayers. On the other hand, England would be keen to cap off their brilliant summer with their first-ever victory in a major tournament. They has made it to three World Cup finals so far but have never won any. But they are in fine form here and if the comprehensive win over world champions Australia in the semifinals is any reckoner, they surely have enough firepower to overwhelm the West Indian juggernaut. However, they will surely know that playing the West Indies in one-dayers is a far more threatening proposition as compared to Tests and would be gunning for revenge. Lara, whose captaincy is hanging by the thread, suddenly senses an opportunity and knows a victory tomorrow would act as a fresh lease of life for him as a captain. But the 34-year-old would know that England are a lot tougher and confident side than they have been in over a decade and their success in Tests arena is now reflecting in one-day cricket. They are humble in victory and show respect to the vanquished as skipper Michael Vaughan has unfailingly done to India and Australia in the past month. They are able to stand up to the barbs of the opponents and even batting, their somewhat weak point in one-day cricket, is beginning to come alive. Marcus Trescothick and Vaughan had an indifferent summer in one-day cricket but their innings of 80-odd in the semis would do a world of good to England at the top of the order. Andrew Strauss is proving nerveless and Paul Collingwood and Andrew Flintoff are match-winning allrounders. In Steve Harmison and Flintoff, England have two extremely potent new-ball bowlers. Both like to hit the deck hard and would do it profusely against Lara knowing that the champion left-hander was felled by a vicious bouncer from Shoaib Akhtar in the semifinals. —

Rao puts Rest of India in
commanding position
Chandigarh, September 24 By the time the third day’s play came to a close, the Rest of India were sitting pretty at 363 for nine. With a 116-run first-innings lead, the Rest of India are now 479 runs ahead. With two days still to go in the five-day match, depleted Mumbai surely are in an unenviable situation. Starting from their overnight score of 84 for 2, the Rest of India could not make a sound start. A big score was expected from in-form skipper Dinesh Mongia, who was out cheaply in the first innings. But the Chandigarh player, on the fringe of selection to the national squad, proved a failure once again. Mongia was batting on 12 when seamer Avishkar Salvi cut short his innings. Salvi induced an edge off the blade of Mongia for wicketkeeper Vinayak Samant to take a good catch diving to his right. Akash Chopra as usual was content to play the waiting game. The extra-cautious approach did not pay much dividends to the former India opener. He added 15 runs to his overnight score of 26 before being done in by wily Sairaj Bahutule who gleefully accepted a return catch to send him back. Chopra’s 191-minute vigil at the wicket fetched him 41 runs as Mumbai were reduced to 126 for 5.
Parthiv Patel and Venugopal Rao combined at this stage to consolidate the Rest of India innings. Rao, who trained for three years at the Chandigarh Cricket Academy run by Dronacharya awardee
D.P. Azad, did not play even a single false stroke and scored a chanceless century, while
Parthiv, as in the first innings, looked assured. Both frustrated a depleted Mumbai bowling attack and produced a 162-run stand which effectively took the match away from Mumbai. Mumbai must have sorely missed the services of their key fast bowler Munaf Patel. Munaf had hurt his shoulder while bowling on the first day and returned back yesterday for further treatment. Their stand was finally broken when Parthiv hooked a Salvi delivery to Vinayak Mane at square leg.
Parthiv, who had scored 60 runs in the first innings, again came good with 68. Venugopal scored 113 before holing out to Salvi at long on off
Powar. Zaheer Khan played an unbeaten 46-run cameo off 41 balls to virtually put the match beyond Mumbai. His entertaining knock included four huge sixes and three scorching fours. For Mumbai, Bahutule and Powar scalped three wickets apiece, while Salvi took two. Scoreboard Rest of India

Kirti Azad, national selector, also spoke on the occasion. The Parle Cup was launched in Bangalore in 2000. Salwan School, New Delhi, are the current champions. |
Ropar Hawks survive sudden death
Chandigarh, September 24 In another match, Centre of Excellence, Patiala, subdued a fighting Central Industrial Security Force 7-6 in the tiebreaker after holding the rivals 2-2 in regulation time. Hosts Chandigarh XI, who were scheduled to play Punjab National Bank XI, got a walkover as the bank men failed to turn up. Fresh from their title win in the 13th All-India Baba Farid Gold Cup at Faridkot yesterday, where they edged out Central Railway 7-6 in the tiebreaker, Ropar Hawks carried their good form to subdue the energetic Bangalore outfit in the battle of strokes which extended to sudden death. In the regulation period, the two sides were locked goal-less. Both teams took nine strokes each. The Bangalore outfit is being groomed by Leo Anthony under the watchful eyes of former Indian skipper Dhanraj Pillay and former Olympian goalkeeper Ashish Ballal, who are funding the academy. On the whole, Ropar Hawks enjoyed an edge over their rivals, especially in the first half, but wayward shooting coupled with some fine goalkeeping by Pfokrelo under the Bangalore outfit’s bar denied them a chance to forge ahead in regulation time. In the second half, both teams forced a couple of short corners which all proved abortive. In the tie-breaker that ensued, Ropar Hawks found the target thrice through Kulvir Singh, Jaswant Singh and William but Dhanraj-Ballal Academy restored parity through Varun, Changappa, and Bharath. Thereafter, in sudden death, Harmeek Singh proved to be Ropar Hawks’ saviour when he scooped to the right of the goalkeeper to put the ball in after three unsuccessful attempts by his team-mates. The Bangalore outfit could not score off four attempts in sudden death and thus bowed out of the tournament. In the second match, Cyril Ekka put CISF ahead through a penalty corner in the 16th minute and Prateek bolstered the lead through a field goal in the 28th minute. The fighting Patiala outfit rallied strongly to neutralise the advantage that CISF enjoyed in the second session. First Sarbraj converted a short corner in the 42nd minute to make it 1-2 and then Jatin’s field goal three minutes later brought the Patiala lads roaring back into the game. In the subsequent tiebreaker, Centre of Excellence displayed confidence in ample measure by converting all their strokes while CISF failed to score off the last stroke, with the COE goalkeeper making a fine save. Saturday’s fixtures: ITBP v Signals (11 am); RCF v Namdhari XI (12.30 pm); IHF Juniors v EME (2pm); Army XI v Northern Railway (3.30 pm).

Big win for PNB Hockey Academy
Amritsar, September 24 Bhargava scored four field goals in 21, 31, 42 and 57th minutes. Manbir Singh’s goal through penalty corner just two minutes after the start of the match failed to lift the morale of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Academy. The match between Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar, and Sukhchain Hockey Academy, Faridkot, ended in a 2-2 draw. Right-in Rahul of Jalandhar provided the first breakthrough in the 28th minute through a penalty corner. However, just after four minutes, forward Dalip Kumar of Faridkot scored the equaliser. Anil Kumar brought the lead to Faridkot in the 42nd minute. Jalandhar’s Gagandeep equalled the score in the 47th minute. Neither team could score any goal in the last 23 minutes of the game. Punjab and Sind Bank Hockey Academy, Jalandhar, edged out Lucknow Hostel 1-0 in a keenly contested match. Full-back Tasawoorjit Singh scored the solitary goal through a penalty corner in the eighth minute. |
