Chennai, September 12
Tamil Nadu will soon follow Haryana. The state plans to implement election rules first implemented in Haryana by debarring persons with more than two children from contesting elections.

The State Election Commission (SEC) here has recommended to the Tamil Nadu Government to amend election rules to debar persons having more than two children from contesting the local body elections.

The local body elections for 1124 posts in Tamil Nadu are scheduled for September 27 this year.

According to the state election commissioner, Mr. V. Palanichamy, the two-child norm was first implemented by Haryana and followed by the Maharashtra and Orissa governments. It was also upheld by the Supreme Court.

The Tamil Nadu Government would discuss the issue with all political parties and arrive at a consensus.

He said the SEC had also suggested to the state government to make it mandatory for candidates for the local body elections to file affidavits about their assets, educational qualifications and criminal cases pending against them.

Another recommendation was to accord special powers to the District Collectors to assess the reason for resignation of certain local body leaders after getting elected.
