The Chandigarh Administration was today forced to start a system of rotational power cuts in the city following a threat of disconnection of power supply to the city.

Auto drivers’ strike hits students, office-goers
Mohali, September 9
Hundreds of schoolchildren and office-goers were inconvenienced this morning due to an indefinite strike by auto-rickshaw drivers in the township. Over 300 auto drivers, along with their vehicles, gathered this morning at the Phase VIII parade ground in protest against the “indifferent” attitude of the Chandigarh Administration towards Punjab autos plying in Chandigarh.

Infighting, not fund crunch, plagues PU sports

In spite of a corpus of nearly Rs 35 lakh at its disposal, sports activities in Panjab University are suffering due to internal wrangling in the university’s Department of Sports. Nearly one-and-a-half months into the academic session and 15 inter-college tournaments and six training camps later, the university continues to sit over these funds meant to promote sports.

Tribune employees donate blood in memory of founder

More than 300 employees of The Tribune group of newspapers donated blood at two camps organised by The Tribune Employees Union in memory of Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, founder of The Tribune Trust, today. While one camp was organised at the head office here, the other was organised at the Bathinda centre of the newspaper.

Women still victims of atrocities, abuse: Expert

It's a paradox that India' s 496 million strong female population, larger than the combined total population of Canada, the USA and the Russian Federation is still struggling for "empowerment'' and remains a victim of "atrocities and abuse'' in a male-dominated society.

Prof S.K. Trehan dead

Chandigarh, September 9
Prof S. K. Trehan (73), Emeritus Professor, Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, and former Dean University Instruction passed away today morning. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. His funeral procession will start from his residence in Sector 9 at 11 am tomorrow.

Man booked for misusing car loan

The Economic Offences Wing has booked a man of Sector 28-A for allegedly using a car loan of Rs 3.87 lakh, raised from the Sector 47-D branch of Punjab and Sind Bank, for some other purpose.

Servant found dead
Chandigarh, September 9
The body of a 30-year-old servant was found under mysterious circumstances in a house in Sector 33 today. According to the police, Narinder Chauhan was found dead by employees of a company in which his owner, Mr N.V. Ramnan, was working as Chairman.

Man dies as bus hits scooter
Chandigarh, September 9
A person died today, when a CTU bus hit their scooter near the Grain Market, Sector 26. Jatinder Sharma, a resident of Sector 38, was riding pillion on a scooter (HR-03- B-1214), driven by Chaman Lal Batra, when the bus hit the scooter.

Five injured in road mishaps
Dera Bassi, September 9
Five persons, including two brothers, were injured in two accidents on the Kalka-Ambala highway, today. According to the police, cyclists Ajaib Singh, Tarsem Singh and his brother Harmesh Singh, residents of Jhajjo village, near here, were injured when a Ambala-bound crammed into them from behind.

Scooterist killed
Panchkula, September 9
A 36-year old scooterist, Vijay Kumar, was crushed to death by a tipper (HR37-4090) in Burj Kotian village last night. The victim, a resident of Delhi, had come here to meet his brother. The police has registered a case against the driver of the tipper.

Sector 17 shops to open at 11 am

The Chandigarh Administration today changed the shop timings in the city’s main shopping centre 17. Shops will now open at 11 am and close at 9 pm lunch break will be between 2 pm to 4 pm.

Residents here can now avail the benefits of commodity trading as V. Kumar and Company, member of multi-commodity exchange, Mumbai, today launched forward trading in commodities by putting terminals at its newly opened branch office in the Sector 26 grain market, a hub of commodity business.

PU undecided over students’ poll

Panjab University continues to be undecided about the date of elections to the Panjab University Campus students’ Council though the authorities are exploring the possibility of holding the election on September 24.

The Chandigarh Administration today gave a go-ahead to the city colleges to hold indirect elections to students council. The elections are likely to be held on September 24.

PU creates seat for topper
Chandigarh, September 9
Panjab University will create an additional seat in the M Pharmacy course to accommodate Vipin Mattu, a topper of the university, who was denied admission to the course despite standing eighth in the entrance test since his re-evaluation result was awaited. The decision came after four days of an indefinite fast by the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) in this regard. Fasting students were sitting outside the VC office since September 6.

Schools indulging in illegal activity

At least eight schools in the region have been “ illegally” sponsoring students of unaffiliated schools for the annual examinations conducted by the CBSE. Under the arrangement, the schools make the students from its unaffiliated branches or other unaffiliated institutions appear as regular candidates.

CBI allowed to produce Kohli in Delhi court today
Chandigarh, September 9
A local court here today allowed the CBI to shift Maninderpal Singh Kohli, the suspect in the case of rape and murder of British school girl Hannah Foster, to Delhi to produce him in a Special Court there tomorrow for his extradition to the UK.

The PGI has “initiated an administrative action’’ today to probe into the alleged lapses on the part of the Medical Superintendent’s office in the sanitation contract in 2002, which had resulted in financial irregularities.
