Lathicharge: Bar Council for probe
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, September 4
The Bar Council of India (BCI), the apex body of lawyers in the country, today demanded probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the brutal lathicharge on advocates by the UP police in Lucknow.

Giving a call to the advocates for holding of “dharnas” throughout the country on September 8 in protest against the incident, BCI Chairman Jagannath Patnaik told mediapersons here that the police action was “unprovoked”.

“The action of Uttar Pradesh police was shocking. We cannot tolerate such atrocities. We vehemently condemn the brutal and unprovoked assault on lawyers,” he said.

Mr Patnaik said the BCI would send a team to Lucknow tomorrow to take on the spot assessment of the incident and to inquire about the well beings of injured advocates.
