The Bar Council of
India (BCI), the apex body of lawyers in the country, today demanded
probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the brutal lathicharge on
advocates by the UP police in Lucknow.
Giving a call to the advocates
for holding of “dharnas” throughout the country on September 8 in
protest against the incident, BCI Chairman Jagannath Patnaik told
mediapersons here that the police action was
“unprovoked”.
“The action of Uttar Pradesh police was shocking.
We cannot tolerate such atrocities. We vehemently condemn the brutal
and unprovoked assault on lawyers,” he said.
Mr Patnaik said the
BCI would send a team to Lucknow tomorrow to take on the spot
assessment of the incident and to inquire about the well beings of
injured advocates.
