Militant groups clash, 3 Lashkar ultras killed

Srinagar, September 2
Three Lashkar-e-Toiba militants were today killed in a clash with Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district over distribution of funds sent from across the border to sustain militancy in the state.

A senior state intelligence official told PTI “from the inputs we have, Hizb and Lashkar militants clashed following a disagreement over the share of funds from Pakistan for sustaining militancy in the state”.

Two of the militants have been identified as Omar Pathan and Abu Jindal, both Pakistani nationals, he said, adding that the third terrorist was a local.

The gunfight between militants of the two front-ranking outfits took place at Laktipora village in the Shopian area of the district, official sources said.

JAMMU: A security force personnel and a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant were killed in separate encounters in Doda and Rajouri districts of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said.

The jawan identified as Gurjeet Singh was killed when militants attacked a patrol party in the Dachhan forests in the Ramban area of Doda district last night, they said.

In another incident, a militant belonging to the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen outfit was killed in a gunbattle with troops in the Tharu area of Rajouri district last night, the sources said.

One AK assault rifle and two magazines were seized from his possession, they said. — PTI

Governor seeks people’s help to fight terrorism

Srinagar, September 2
The Jammu and Kashmir Governor, Lt.-Gen S.K. Sinha (retd) here today said that the holding of ceasefire along the border provided respite to border-dwellers though the incidents of violence continued in the hinterland.

The Governor said this while interacting with a group of 23 girls from Kargil at Raj Bhavan here, before their departure for a two-week tour to various parts of the country. The girls would be visiting Jammu, Chandigarh and Delhi under the Army’s Sadhbavna Operation to help in the process of national integration. The girls are the inmates of a women empowerment centre set up by the Army in Kargil, where they are imparted training in various crafts, knitting and given computer training.

Referring to the low-intensity war in Jammu and Kashmir, the Governor said that this brought misery to every section of population. Intermittent grenade attacks and inhuman acts of militants posed a threat to civilised society, he said, hoping that with the support of the people the menace would be overcome.

GOC-in-C visits Siachen

The GOC-in-C, Northern Command, Lt-Gen Hari Prasad, and the AOC-in-C, Western Air Command, Air Marshal S.P. Tyagi, visited the highest battlefield at the Siachen glacier today and interacted with the troops.

They visited the air base at Thoise, Turtuk, Tyakshi and Partapur in the Ladakh region. Lt-Gen M.L. Naidu, General Officer Commanding of the 14 Corps, accompanied them.

They were impressed by operational preparedness and high morale of troops and praised the good work done by airmen and jawans in the difficult terrain under harsh living conditions along the border.

The presidents of the AWWA (Northern Command) and the AFWWA (Western Air Command) visited the Army goodwill schools and women empowerment centres at Tyakshi and Partapur.

Names not included in voters’ lists

The BJP has accused the Jammu and Kashmir Government of trying to tamper with the process of preparation of fresh electoral rolls by skipping several residential localities here.

In a statement here today, Mr Shamsher Singh Manhas, vice-president of the state BJP, alleged that a number of persons had not been registered in Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta nagar, Shastri Nagar, Channi Himmat, University, Talab Tillo and Janipur.

The electoral rolls in J&K are being updated after a gap of 16 years and there is enthusiasm among the people to get enrolled, but the election staff has skipped a number of households.

He alleged that all this was being done at the behest of certain Congress leaders.

The BJP leader sought intervention of the Election Commission so that each and every voter was enrolled in the electoral list.

Kashmir’s first photo website launched

The first photo website of Kashmir by a news photographer, Habib Naqash, was launched at a function here yesterday.

The website, www.kashmirphoto.com, was launched by a veteran news photographer, Mohammad Amin. Several journalists, senior citizens and professionals attended the function. The website will have photographs on politics, environment, seasons, culture and heritage, with a special section on Ladakh.

With two decades of experience in news photography, Habib has developed into a mature photo-journalist. He has had several close encounters with death and has turned a seasoned campaigner.

The website not only features illustrating footage from Kashmir, mainly from Habib, but also makes thousands of sophisticated eye-catching images available for online ordering to promote the highest standards of photo-journalism.

Panel to select VC of Vaishno Devi varsity

The Governor, Lt-Gen S.K. Sinha (retd), has appointed a search committee to choose a new Vice-Chancellor for Mata Vaishno Devi University at Katra following completion of the term of Mr B.B. Chattoo. In the meantime, Prof Amitabh Mattoo, Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, today assumed additional charge of VC of the Vaishno Devi university.

It is learnt that the members of the search committee are Dr V.S. Raju, Chairman of the National Research Board of the DRDO, Mrs Sonali Kumar, Mr Rohit Kansal and a nominee of the UGC.
