Srinagar, June 8
After struggling for life for over 10 days, senior Awami Action Committee leader and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s uncle, Maulvi Mushtaq breathed his last at the SKIMS hospital here late last evening. He was injured when unidentified persons fired upon him at a mosque near their ancestral place, Rajouri Kadal in old city here on May 29.

A general strike was observed here today in response to a call given by Awami Action Committee (AAC), and Al-Umar Mujahideen to mourn the death of Maulvi Mushtaq, a senior leader of the AAC. Shops and business establishments remained closed in several parts of the city, and educational institutions were closed. Earlier in the morning, vehicles fitted with loud speakers made announcements asking people to observe a shut-down to mourn Maulvi’s death.

Thousands of mourners joined the funeral procession from Rajouri Kadal in downtown, the ancestral place of the Maulvis’, to the ancestral graveyard, Malla Khah this morning. The family, with a legacy of religious preaching, has a stronghold in the old city and outside. It was unlike the past practice that the deceased was laid to rest at Malla Khah instead of the martyrs’ graveyard at Idgah. The founder chairman of Awami action Committee, Mirwazi Maulvi Mohammad Farooq, who fell to the bullets of unidentified gunmen on May 21, 1990, is also laid to rest at the Martyrs’ graveyard at Idgah.

Those who joined the funeral procession included the founder Chairman of APHC, Mirwaiz (chief priest) Maulvi Umar Farooq, Abdul Ghani Bhat, Maulvi Abbas Ansari and other separatist leaders. The mourners, including men, women, young and old, were raising pro-freedom slogans as tight security arrangements had been made all along the route from the ancestral home place of Maulvis to the Malla Khah.

The attack on Maulvi Mushtaq, a retired official, was made on May 29 last when he was offering prayers at a mosque near his home. He was immediately rushed to a the hospital, where he succumbed to the bullet injuries at about 8.30 p.m last night. Earlier yesterday panic and tension gripped most parts of Srinagar following rumours that Maulvi Mushtaq had died.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, has condoled the death of Maulvi Mushtaq Ahmad. In his message, the Chief Minister expressed grief over the death of Maulvi Mushtaq Ahmad following attack on him saying that the killing was unfortunate and deserved severe condemnation. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for eternal peace to the departed soul.

Earlier, JKLF chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik, chairman People’s Political Front Fazal Haq Qureshi and president of breakaway faction of Democratic Freedom Party Syed Saleem Geelani joined the funeral procession.

However, breakaway Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Ghah Geelani and Democratic Freedom Party president Shabir Ahmad Shah could not attend the funeral as they were placed under house arrest since early today.

Earlier, Nimaz-e-Jinazah (prayers before burial) was offered to Mushtaq at historic Jamia Masjid where the body of the deceased was taken in a procession from Mirwaiz Manzil.

Instead of taking the deceased to his residence, AAC leaders brought his body to the Mirwaiz Manzil and kept it there to enable people to pay last respects to the departed leader.

Emotionally-charged Mirwaiz Umer Farooq himself led the Nimaz-e-Jinazah and later accompanied the body to the graveyard where fateh (prayer after burial) was performed by Mufti Azam (head mufti) Bashir-ud-Din.
