Mehbooba to build consensus on Kashmir

Srinagar, June 1
President of People’s Democratic Party Mehbooba Mufti today said the main purpose of her going to Parliament was to build a “consensus” in the country for the resolution of Kashmir issue.

“The people of Jammu and Kashmir need me more here but the main purpose of my going to Parliament is to work towards building consensus in the country for the resolution of the Kashmir issue,” she told reporters after a meeting of PDP working committee here.

“Ask them why I was not made a minister,” she quipped when a reporter remarked that people here were hoping that Mehbooba would be made a central minister as her party was an ally of the Congress. Her priority was not to become a minister but to work for the resolution of the Kashmir issue, she said.

The previous BJP-led NDA government had initiated a peace process in the state and her party wanted the continuation of that process to speed up return of peace in the state, she said.

The PDP, she said, welcomed the Congress-led UPA government’s assurances of continuation of the process.

Dismissing rumours that differences have cropped up within the coalition government, Ms Mehbooba said there may be some “communication gap” but there were “no differences”.

About the controversial Guest Control Act invoked by state Consumer Affairs Minister Taj Mohiuddin, she said the decision may have been taken by the minister keeping in view the weaker sections of the society.

“Since it is an important issue, the Cabinet will sit and take a decision soon,” she said. — PTI
