Troops seal Katra fearing militant strike

Jammu, June 1
Two companies of Army were called out in Katra town here after security forces intercepted militants’ plans to target pilgrims to the holy Vaishnodevi shrine.

Official sources said the troops intercepted wireless communication between two militant commanders discussing attacks on pilgrims in Katra town besides making strikes at the Udhampur-Banihal stretch of the national highway, Jammu-Kathua road, Pathankot railway station and some other vital installations in Jammu.

Katra, the base camp for pilgrimage to Vaishnodevi, has virtually been fortified.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Udhampur-Doda) Satveer Gupta said all requisite arrangements had been made for the safety of pilgrims from different parts of the country.

He said all entry routes to Katra had been plugged and a round-the-clock vigil was being maintained.

The militants were heard saying that their cadres, would be leaving to carry out their strikes soon and that activists of the Al-Faran had been given the job of stepping up violence in Doda district, the sources said. — UNI
