Sanjaya Baru is Media Adviser to PM

Eminent economist and Editor-in-Chief of the Financial Express Sanjaya Baru has been appointed Media Adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He will be taking charge tomorrow.

Dr Baru will enjoy the rank of Additional Secretary for three years.

A Ph.D in Industrial Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dr Baru has been with the media for the past 14 years.

Asked what would be his brief and priorities in his new job, Mr Baru said, "I will be an interface between the Prime Minister and the media. I will be the communicator between the two." He will sit in South Block.

A professional economist, Dr Baru entered the media in 1990 when he joined the Times of India and later became the Associate Editor of the Economic Times.

Dr Baru has been a Professor with Delhi-based Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations. He was also a member of the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB).

Educated at the Osmania University and Nizam College, Hyederabad, Dr Baru is the son of former civil servant V.P.R. Vithal, who belonged to the Andhra Pradesh cadre. His father was also the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh and member of the Tenth Finance Commission.
