Nangal, May 18
Forest fires raged near the Bhakra Dam today endangering the dam’s properties. When this correspondent visited the spot today evening the fire was seen raging near the top of dam and near the powerhouses at the bottom.
On the top of the dam, the fire was raging near the offices of the shipyard of BBMB. The sources reveal that the fire had also destroyed a transformer and a switch yard of the BBMB.
The permanent fire fighting points and fire tenders of the BBMB were busy controlling the fire near the power houses. Many officials of the BBMB from Nangal also reached the spot.
The Chief Engineer (Generation) at Nangal, Mr Vahi, when contacted said the situation was under control.
He said the fire near the power houses might have been caused due to sparks in the 11 KV line nearby.
The forest fire in the surrounding Shivaliks is also threatening many villages of the area.
