Ready for stable, secular govt, claims Congress

New Delhi, May 9
A day ahead of the finale of the Lok Sabha polling, the Congress today sought to position itself as the initiator of a non-NDA coalition. It appropriated the stability plank, assuring the people of providing a stable government.

It was optimistic on unity of secular partners across the country.

Congress spokesman S Jaipal Reddy told the media here that the party would provide a stable secular government and “we are fully confident about unity of secular forces which have become partners of the Congress all over the country.”

Claiming that it had reports “highly favourable” to the party in the elections, he said the country would be “emancipated” from “communal misrule” of the BJP-led NDA government after the final phase of polling tomorrow.

“As the country goes into the final phase of polling, we have reports that are highly favourable to us, not only with regard to the first three phases, but for the next phase tomorrow”, he said.

Ridiculing the BJP-led coalition’s claim to stability, he said. “In our view it is a self-confession of defeatist tendency in their camp.

“With Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha, who was responsible for destabilising the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 1999, as their coalition partner, their worry for stability is understandable”, Mr Reddy said.

“We are confident of the unity of the secular forces and it’s signs are becoming visible all over the country. The Congress will be able to provide a stable and secular government. This is the message we want to send to the country on the eve of the last phase of elections,” he said.

He was assisted at the press conference by Mr Abhisek Singhvi. — UNI
