2 hurt in firing in Sopore

Srinagar, April 21
Tension gripped Sopore township of Baramulla district in north Kashmir today when the BSF troops opened fire to chase away a group of people protesting the Arrest of a youth. Two persons were injured in the incident, official sources said.

The BSF troops deployed near the Sopore bus stand detained Sharief-ud-Din of Keegam village of Kupwara for questioning in the morning, who started shouting, upon which the crowd gathered at the scene demanded his release, the sources said.

Sensing trouble, the BSF personnel opened fire, as a result of which two protesters, including a watchman of the bus stand, sustained bullet injuries.

A BSF spokesman, however, said that the BSF troops opened fire after someone from the crowd fired two pistol shots at them.

He said the BSF personnel had detained a surrendered militant of the Hizbul Mujahideen for questioning but he started shouting, upon which the crowd at the place raised slogans and also pelted stones at the troops.

The BSF spokesman said someone from the crowd also fired two pistol shots, forcing the troops to retaliate in self-defence, resulting in injuries to two civilians.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital from where one of them was sent to Srinagar for specialised treatment.

Chaman Lal Gupta files nomination papers

Jammu, April 21
Accompanied by a large number of supporters, Mr Chaman Lal Gupta, BJP candidate and Minister of State for Defence, today filed his nomination papers for the Udhampur Lok Sabha seat in the office of the returning officer at Kathua.

Later, addressing a large gathering in the Ram Lila ground, he criticised the coalition government of the PDP, Congress and the Panthers Party for discriminating against the Jammu division.

The state BJP chief, Dr Nirmal Singh, and movie star Suresh Oberoi also addressed the rally.

Mr Gupta said the Mufti government had failed to take steps to provide jobs to unemployed youth on the pretext of a financial crunch in the state, but had raised an army of 39 ministers and chairpersons on whom at least Rs 10 crore was being spent. He criticised the government for retrenching about 22,000 ad hoc employees. Dr Nirmal Singh accused the government of having put in cold storage the vital commitments of implementing the Wazir Commission report and appointing a delimitation commission to rectify the imbalance with Jammu. — TNS
