9 die in blast at PDP rally
Two Ministers among 53 injured in Uri grenade attack
Srinagar, April 8
In the first major attack on the electoral process, militants hurled a grenade at a public meeting of the ruling People’s Democratic Party killing six persons and injuring 45 at Uri, near the LoC, this afternoon.
(According to PTI, nine persons were killed and 53 injured in the grenade attack).

Ayodhya finds place in NDA manifesto
New Delhi, April 8
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today released the NDA manifesto that favours an early and amicable resolution of the Ayodhya issue and promises a legislation to ensure that important offices of the Indian State are reserved for those who are citizens by origin.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today said the CBI should take into account the “new light” thrown by press reports on the Bofors pay-off case. He was reacting to a question on the news report about observations made by Swedish investigator Sten Lindstorm, involved in the investigation of the Bofors case, who had stated that Congress president Sonia Gandhi should be questioned in the Bofors pay-off case.

MCC guerrillas kill 28 cops, kidnap 41
Kolkata, April 8
In two separate incidents,  MCC guerrillas killed  28 policemen and kidnapped 41 police personnel after raiding a police post and attacking a mobile police party on duty. Unofficial sources, however, put the death figure at 35.

Punjab shifts two DIGs; Akalis call it eyewash

Swapping of positions by Deputy Inspectors-General of Police of Faridkot and Jalandhar Ranges ordered today by the Punjab Government on the directions of the Election Commission of India notwithstanding, the Shiromani Akali Dal described the transfers as mere eyewash.

Haryana DGP goes on leave

The show-down between the Election Commission of India and the Haryana Government was averted today when the Director-General of Police, Dr M.S. Malik, proceeded on leave till May 10, when the polling in the state would be over.
