Polio drops:
At least 2,130 children were administered pulse polio drops under the Pulse Polio Immunisation Campaign launched under the supervision of Dr Satnam Singh, Senior Medical Officer, Dr Mahesh Kumar Jindal, MO, and Mr Prabodh Sood, Naib Tehsildar, Amloh.

RESEARCH GRANT: The University Grants Commission has awarded research grant of Rs 5 lakh to Dr Paramjit Singh, professor of Sociology and Dr Gurpreet Bal, reader, Sociology, Guru Nanak Dev University for study on ‘‘Scheduled Castes in Punjab for period of three years’’. The study will evaluate and examine patterns of social mobility among the Scheduled Castes including aspects of emigration, empowerment, education and entrepreneurship.

CHEATING ALLEGED: Mr Basant Singh of Jhinger Kalan got a case of cheating registered on Tuesday against Gurmail Chand, Secretary of the a cooperative service society of his village.

WOMAN, SON BOOKED: The police has registered a case under Section 363, 364 and 366 of the IPC against Jogi, his mother Jasbir Kaur, Santosh and Prince of Bajwara village allegedly for abducting his daughter. It was alleged that aforesaid persons came on March 23 and took Pooja with them for her participation in a religious function. Since then Pooja did not return to her house.

SUCCUMBS: Toni of jhuggis located near the SDM Court, Garhshanker, died in the Civil Hospital on Tuesday. He was injured when his neighbours Subhash and Lal Ram beat him up following their wives quarrel with Toni’s wife on April 4. The Garhshankar police has registered a case.

ACCIDENT: One person was killed while another injured in a collision between scooter and a motor cycle at Dhadda village crossing near here on Tuesday. Harjit Banga (26) and his father Mohan Lal, a government school principal were on way to Santokhpura locality on their scooter, when a motor cycle hit them. Mr Harjit died on the spot and Mr Mohan Lal was admitted to Johl Hospital for treatment. A case has been registered.

REVIEWED: Mr Rakesh Kumar Verma, Deputy Commissioner, here reviewed the implementation of bio-friendly techniques of farming. He exhorted farmers to adopt vermiculture to raise fertility of soil.

LUDHIANA
HAILED: A meeting of the executive committee of the Punjabi Culture Study Circle International was held under the chairmanship of its adviser, Mr Iqbal Mahal, on Tuesday. The meeting appreciated Dr Surjit Patar for his contributions towards the promotion of Punjabi language and culture and congratulated him for his re-election as president, Punjabi Sahit Academy. Mr Mahal, Mr Joginder Kalsi, Dr Jagtar Dhiman and Ms Manu Sharma Sohal shared their views. Mr Manjit Singh sang songs on Shiv Kumar Batalvi and presented CDs and cassettes of his latest recordings to Mr Mahal.

ONE HELD: The police here has arrested Raj Kumar and recovered 710 pirated compact disks (CD’s) from his possession. A case under Sections 51, 52A, 63, 68A of the Copy Right Act 1957 has been registered in this connection.

Phagwara
CRUSHED TO DEATH: Scooterist Malkiat Singh of Chachrari village was crushed to death on the GT Road on Wednesday by a bus near Chahal Nagar Chowk of Civil hospital. The deceased was in his fifties. Agitated people beat up bus driver Harbhajan Singh who was arrested by the police, the bus was impounded.

SC/BC/ST STAFF STIR: The All-India Confederation of SC/BC/ST Employees Organisation, Punjab will hold state-level demonstration at Jalandhar on April 9 in protest against anti-Dalit, anti-reservation and anti-Dalit employee policies of the government. This was disclosed here on Wednesday by Mr Harmesh Lal Ghera, state vice-president of the body.

TRACTOR SEIZED: The police has arrested Sukhdev Singh of Giddarpindi village and recovered from him a tractor stolen from Una district in Himachal Pradesh. His accomplice Satpal of Rampur Jagir village escaped, it was learnt on Wednesday.

ASSUMES CHARGE: Ms Navjot Kaur Sohal has taken over as Additional Civil Judge, cum-Judicial Magistrate here on Wednesday in place of Ms Asha Condal, who has been transferred to Ropar. Earlier Ms Sohal was posted at Phagwara.

LAUNCHED: As colourful twinkling lights illuminated hazy synthetic smog, models displayed new range of wrist watches here on Wednesday launched by Swiss manufacturer Longines. The show was organised at Ethos in Sector 8. Country manager of Swatch group Gopalratnam Kannan said, “with the launch of this range, we bring to city residents a tradition of Swiss craftsmanship complimented with unmistakable elegance of Longines watches”. He added that both the men and women watch collections were inspired from the 1920s look.

Mini fridge: Kiran Foreign Trades on Wednesday launched two models of mini mobile fridge. Christened IGLU, the fridge can also be installed in cars and other vehicles. It is easy to install and carry and is also noise-free. It is thermo-electric and has the facility of both heating and cooling. Being launched in two sizes, 10 litres and 17 litres, the cost of the fridges is Rs 4750 and Rs 5500, respectively.

DC’s plea: The District Electoral Officer and the Deputy Commissioner, Ms Satwanti Ahlawat, has appealed to workers of different political parties to follow the code of conduct, so that the coming parliamentary election may be conducted peacefully. She appealed to all political parties to ensure that all posters would be removed after the election campaign was over as per provisions of the Defacement Act, 1989.

UPLIFT OF GIRL CHILD: Deputy Commissioner Mahtab Singh Sehrawat said here on Tuesday that Rs 1.34 lakh was spent under the ‘Girl Child Development Scheme’. The amount has been distributed among 269 girl children.

TWO INJURED: Two persons were injured in a shooting incident at the Gandhi Nagar Colony here on Tuesday. Mr Dharamender, along with Pardeep went to a petrol station on the Safidon Road in their car, where some unidentified youths opened fire and injured them.
