Madrid, March 14
Five persons, including two Indians, were arrested and two Spaniards of Indian origin summoned for questioning in connection with the Madrid train bombings that left 200 persons dead and 1,500 injured.
The announcement of the arrest of the two Indians and three Moroccans was made by Interior Minister Angel Acebes last night. Mr Acebes, speaking at a press conference, said the five suspects were all arrested around Madrid. “One might have connections with Moroccan extremist groups. But it is still very early to establish to what degree,” he said. He did not name any group.
Two Spaniards of Indian origin were also called for questioning, but were not expected to be arrested, Mr Acebes said.
Asked whether the Basque separatist group ETA was still considered a suspect, Mr Acebes said: “We must not rule anything out.” The five suspects were arrested in connection with a cellphone found inside an explosives-packed gym bag discovered on one of the four bombed rush-hour trains, the minister said. —
