Athletics meet at PCTE concludes

More than 150 students participated in the second annual athletics meet of the Punjab College of Technical Education (PCTE), Baddowal, near here, which concluded at the ITBP ground yesterday.

Mr P.S. Papta, Commandant, ITBP, inaugurated the meet. Wg Cdr H.S. Gill, Chairman of the college, presided over the inaugural function.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr K.N.S. Kang, Director of the college, said sports not only ensured good health but also inculcated competitive skills among the participants.

Results: (Women); long jump— Pancy Puneet Kaur of BBA II - first, Amanda of BCA I - second, and Koketjo of BCA I - third; 200 m— Jagrietie Thapar of BBA II - first, Sunandan of BBA II - second, and Preeti of BBA I- third; discus throw— Koketjo of BCA I - first, Meenakshi of MBA I - second, and Jagrietie Thapar of BBA II - third; shot put— Koketjo of BCA I - first, Jagrietie Thapar of BBA II - second, and Pansy Puneet Kaur of BBA II - third; 400 m— Manpreet Kaur of BCA I - first, Savita of BCA I - second, and Jagrietie Thapar of BBA II - third.

Boys: discus throw— Sikandar of MBA I - first, Harmeet Singh of BCA I - second, and Harmanpreet of BBA II - third; 200 m— Simranjit Singh of BCA I - first, Ravinder Singh Gill of MCA III - second, and Jaspreet Singh of BCA III - third; long jump— Gurinderdeep Singh of BBA II - first, Satvir Singh of BC I - second, and Jaspreet Singh of BCA III - third.

Jhande, Seehan Daud teams enter kabaddi final

Ludhiana, March 14
Teams from Jhande and Seehan Daud villages today recorded victories in the kabaddi (57 kg) semi-final matches to set up the title clash in the annual rural sports festival being organised by the gram panchayat and Sports Club in association with NRIs of the area at Thakkarwal, 10 km from here. The Jhande team prevailed over Khanpur 17-14 while the Seehan Daud team got the better of Khanpur 19-14.

In the 47-kg category, the Jordhan team proved too good for Mallahan. In the 52-kg section, the Kaunke team beat Mallahan and in the 57-kg category, Seehan Daud pipped Jhande 17-15.

In the 62-kg category, Jordhan defeated Deepgarh 15-11, Veelan outplayed Baddowal 16-14, Jhande beat Khanpur 17-14 and Dhandran outclassed Jhande 16-15. In volleyball, Dalleh beat Shimlapuri, Jodhan beat Daddar, Khanjol beat Paamal and Chak Kalan beat Pahlewal.

In the trolley back competition, Dharminder of Khaddoor got first position while the second and third positions were secured by Gurcharan Singh Grewal and Amarjit Singh Grewal , both of Thakkarwal.

Earlier, Mr Darshan Singh Shivalik, a prominent leader of the area, inaugurated the festival. Mr Harpreet Singh, sarpanch of the village, Mr Sadhu Singh and Mr Harmidner Singh, president and treasurer, respectively, of the sports club, were also present on the occasion.

7-wicket win for MC XI

Ludhiana, March 14
A captain’s knock of 51 n.o. by Sunil Sharma and his 72-run partnership with Harmit Batra enabled Municipal Corporation XI to register a seven-wicket victory over Sidharth Cricket Club in an exhibition cricket match played at the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College for Boys here today.

Sunil Sharma won the toss and opted to field first. Thanks to some consistent bowling by Dharminder Rinka and Jaswinder Jassi, MC XI restricted the Sidharth Club to a total of 125 for 7 in their quota of 25 overs. Sidharth Sharma top-scored with 51 followed by Hitesh, who remained unbeaten on 49. For MC XI, Rinka scalped three victims for 18 runs while Jassi chipped in with two wickets conceding 27 runs. MC XI achieved the target in the 16th over after losing just three wickets. Other notable contributors were Harmit Batra, who scored 53 runs with the help of nine boundaries, and Salil, who made 28.
