Militants storm PIB office in Srinagar; 1 shot

Srinagar, March 9
Two militants tonight stormed a building housing the Central Government’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) and Jammu and Kashmir Government’s Information Office triggering a fierce gun-battle even as security personnel shot dead one of the terrorists trying to escape.

Fire broke out in the three-storey building as well as on some adjacent buildings located at busy Residency Road late tonight after the police and para-military forces lobbed smoke shells into it to flush out the two terrorists who opened indiscriminate firing.

Some of the Special Services Bureau personnel, who were also holed up inside the building, were safely evacuated by the police and para-military personnel when the building was set ablaze.

Head Constable Mohan Singh of SSB told PTI that the militants in army fatigue appeared at the building at a time when the change of guard was taking place.

After trading gun-fire for about three-and-half hours, one militant was shot dead by the police as he tried to flee from the building. Meanwhile, a senior official of the security forces said there had been no fire from the building for the past one hour. However, they only have the body of the militant killed earlier while trying to escape, he said, adding that the building has been completely destroyed in fire. — PTI
