Robbery was planned in jail

Karnal, March 8
The robbery in the house of a local hotelier, Mr Vijay Kumar, on Saturday morning has once again brought the Karnal jail into limelight. The robbery was allegedly planned inside the jail and executed by a known history-sheeter after he came out on parole.

Two weeks back, when the District Magistrate, Mr R.S. Doon, along with other officials of the district administration, raided the jail, many flaws in the management system were detected. A knife, drugs and Kisan Vikas Patras worth Rs 2 lakh were seized from inmates during the raid. Mr Doon had already recommended to the state Home Department to immediately transfer the Jail Superintendent, Mr Yudhister Yadav, and the Medical Officer, Dr Munish Kumar. Last week, a convict was murdered in the jail, allegedly by one of his brothers lodged in the same jail.

Police sources revealed that an FIR had been registered in the robbery case against the history-sheeter, Vajira, and his father, mother and an associate arrested on charges of providing shelter to criminals and hatching conspiracy in the case. However, the main accused was still eluding the police till the reports last came in.

It may be mentioned that four robbers, equipped with automatic firearms, looted Rs 65,000, a revolver and 450 gm of jewellery from the house of Mr Vijay Kumar on Saturday.

The incident also raised doubts over the role of the jail staff in writing the conduct and character report of convicts before recommending them for parole. The main suspect, Vajira, had allegedly planned the robbery in the jail and executed it after getting released on parole on February 26.

Vajira’s father Lakhmi Chand, mother Phoolo Devi and associate Jeeta, who were arrested by the local police yesterday, were today produced before a local court. The court has ordered judicial custody for them for 14 days.

The sources further said that a special team had been constituted to investigate into the case. A police party had also rushed to Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh to conduct a raid on a possible hideout of Vajira.
