Bandh against steel prices today

Several bodies of the steel consuming industry today decided to observe a bandh tomorrow as a token protest against the “attitude” of the government towards the steep hike in the prices of steel.

Joint Sub-Registrar held on graft charge
Ludhiana, March 1
The local Naib Tehsildar-cum-Joint Sub-Registrar was arrested here today at Jagraon for accepting a bribe. According to information, Mr Surjit Singh Khosa, DSP (Vigilance) Moga, arrested Mr Bhupinder Singh, Joint Sub-Registrar, while accepting a bribe of Rs 15,00 for the delivery of a general power of attorney executed by Mr Jagdish Singh of Kothe Sherjung in favour of Mr Gurdev Singh of Moga.

PUDA takes up development of five-acre park
Ludhiana, March 1
The Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) has taken up the development of a park in an area of over five acres along the Chandigarh road at an estimated cost of Rs 21 lakh, which will benefit more than 3 lakh people in several colonies in that area including Jamalpur, Urban Estate, Dhandari, Sector 32 and Sector 39. According to the Urban Estate Residents Association, which had been pursuing the matter vigorously for quite some time now, the work for the development of a green belt had commenced early this month and the expected date of completion of civil works and plantation was May 2004. 

Identity crisis in voter cards

A large number of local residents would be deprived of the right to cast their vote if the election staff were to insist on the production of the identity cards issued by the Election Commission of India. A large number of voters here are either yet to be issued cards or have cards with wrong particulars.

Woman killed as vehicle overturns
Ludhiana, March 1
Prem Kaur of Meharban locality died in a accident on the Rahon road here today when the three-wheeler, in which she was travelling, overturned. She died on way to the hospital. The body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem. The police has registered a case.

Dr K.N. Pathak, Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, today asserted that students, teachers and society should face local challenges by thinking globally and acting locally. He stressed the need for promoting the rural segment of society for this. He was addressing students of the local Guru Nanak National College at a convocation function.

Little Angels Playway School celebrates annual day
Ludhiana, March 1
Little Angels Playway School, BRS Nagar, celebrated its annual day and prize distribution function here today. Tiny tots were awarded medals and certificates. They were also honoured as ‘‘Best Angel’’, ‘‘Angel Glory’’ and ‘‘Angel Excellent of the Year’’. Those who were awarded were Yashmilan, Armaan, Manya, Priyanka, Samyukta, Kritika and Bani. Prizes were also given for their performance in academics. Trophies were also given to the best parents.

Crescendo from today

Ludhiana, March 1
Crescendo, a two-day cultural and literary extravaganza of Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GGNIMT) will begin on Tuesday. Mr Ashwini Sekhri, Minister for Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Punjab, will inaugurate the festival. Bhagwant Mann, a renowned TV comedian, and Sarabjeet Cheema, well-known Punjabi singer, will also attend the function. Teams from about 35 colleges from all over Punjab will participate. More than 20 literary, professional, cultural and fine arts events will be organised during the festival. The fine arts events will include flower arrangement, sketching, collage making, mehndi and rangoli.

Teenager with AIDS struggles for life
Ludhiana, March 1
A 16-year-old boy, Gurnam Singh (not his real name), who got afflicted with AIDS, has been struggling for life at a local hospital. Doctors maintain that his condition is stable but because of low immunity, his chances of survival are remote.

Quality healthcare made available to the poor

The efforts of people of Mandi Gobindgarh have borne fruit. Prabhat Puri Charitable Hospital was set up in 1995 with five beds but now has about 50 beds. Non-government organisations are coming forward to make quality health care accessible to the poor.

Physical education and sports are opted as subjects by many students at Class XI and XII levels of the CBSE. The book will not only provide them insight into and training about health, hygiene, fitness, but also valuable information on games and sports.
