Mumbai, February 26
Veteran Congress leader Shankarrao Bhaurao Chavan died at Bombay Hospital in Mumbai this evening after a prolonged illness. He was 83.

Chavan’s health took for the worse last week when he underwent surgery for the removal of a blood clot. He had been on life-support system since then and the end came a little before 4 p.m., according to sources.

Chavan’s body will be taken to his Sagar residence at Napean Sea Road in South Mumbai to enable people to pay their last respects. His body will be taken to his native Nanded town by a special defence aircraft and the cremation will take place tomorrow, the sources said.
