Lt-Gen J.J. Singh Western Command Chief

Lt-Gen J.J. Singh, a third generation officer in the Army is to take over as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the prestigious Western Command which faces the maximum wrath from across the borders.

Lt-Gen J. J.Singh, who is likely to take over his new posting from February 1, will succeed Lt-Gen Shamsher Singh Mehta who will retire from service on January 31.Official orders for his new posting are expected to come in the coming few days.

Presently the GOC-in-C of the Army Training Command, Lt-Gen Singh has been instrumental in giving the nascent organisation a distinctly discernable and widely appreciated thrust towards modernisation during his tenure in Shimla.

One of his achievements during the tenure has been the evolution of the “doctrine for the Indian Army”, which has also been regarded as a landmark document and which will lay the guidelines for the Army in the future.

The General has seen a variety of first hand combat experience in his 12 years of field experience. He has the distinction of being decorated with the AVSM and the VSM while in command of troops and in Military Operations Directorate.

On this year’s Republic Day, he was also decorated with the PVSM.

The General had led troops from the frontline in the battle which also saw him getting seriously wounded during the anti-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir as a Brigade Commander. For that operation he also received the War Wound Medal and was commended by the Chief of Army Staff.

Lt- Gen Singh also has a wide experience of appointments in the Army, which includes serving as the Additional Director- General in the Directorate-General of Military Operations during the Kargil war .

He was also in the Operational Logistics Directorate and has done all distinguished professional courses which include Defence Services Staff Course, Senior Command, Higher Command and National Defence College course.
