David. R. Lal, a 28-year-old man from Aligarh was brought to Christian Medical College and Hospital for renal transplant. He had been sick for over six years and his wife, Poonam, was supporting the family of five with her marginal monthly income.

Kite mania hits city
Ludhiana, January 13
Kite mania ruled the sunny Lohri today as the residents celebrated the winter festival to the hilt. It was a clear and pleasant day for the kite-lovers as bright sunshine greeted them in the morning in sharp contrast to yesterday's brief foggy spell. And to add to their joy , a mild eastward breeze continued throughout the day facilitating kite-flying .

Stop issuing new permits, say bus operators
Ludhiana, January 13
A meeting of the executive committee of the Punjab Mini Bus Operators Association was held here yesterday. Its members expressed concern over the hike in diesel and petrol prices and flayed the Transport Department for granting permits liberally, thus creating unhealthy competition among old and new permit holders.

Scientists’ advice to farmers
Ludhiana, January 13
Wheat scientists of Punjab Agricultural University have suggested the applying of second irrigation to wheat sown during November and first irrigation to wheat sown during December. To late sown wheat, apply remaining dose of ‘n’ along with first irrigation. In light textured soils, where wheat follows paddy sulphur and manganese deficiency can be expected.

College to organise cultural programme
Samrala, January 13
The local Malwa College, Bondli-Samrala, will organise cultural programme on the college premises from January 15 to 16, according to the college Principal, Dr Parminder Singh Benipal, here today.

Government College gets Grade A
Ludhiana, January 13
The Principal and the staff of Government College claimed that the college had been awarded grade-A (Institutional Score 85-90 per cent) by NAAC- National Assessment and Accreditation Council recently. The status of the college as a leading institution of north India had thus been vindicated.

Whirlpool told to pay compensation
Ludhiana, January 13
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has penalised Whirlpool of India Ltd for supplying a defective washing machine to a customer and not rectifying the faults. The company has been directed to pay Rs 3,000 as compensation to the consumer for harassment.

Punjab Scouts bag national trophy
Amloh, January 13
A contingent of 12 Scouts and Guides from Punjab which participated in the National Integrated Rally bagged the overall trophy in which as many as 500 Scouts and Guides from 15 states across the country participated. Among the 12 members from Punjab four Scouts and Guides were from Fatehgarh Sahib district.

Skating rink handed over to residents
Ludhiana, January 13
The skating rink of international standard was handed over to residents of Ludhiana here recently by Mr Nahar Singh Gill, Mayor. The skating rink was constructed by the Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, to raise the standard of the skating games in Punjab. The rink is the best skating rink of Asia and about Rs 1 crore was spent on the construction of this rink.

The inaugural edition of the US Gold Kabaddi Cup Tournament to be organised by the Malwa Yuvak Sevawan Club in association with the gram panchayat will be held at Dhandhra village near here from January 19.

Lodhi kabaddi meet on January 30

The Seventh Lodhi Kabaddi Cup Tournament will be held at the Guru Nanak Stadium, here on January 30. The winners will be given a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and the losing finalist Rs 60,000. The third and fourth position holders will be given Rs 31,000 each.
