A BSF spokesman said troops on specific information, cordoned off Batnoor village, about 12 km from Tral in South Kashmir district of Pulwama, early this morning to nab militants hiding there.

He said when the troops were about to storm a particular house, militants hiding there opened fire and lobbed hand grenades.

In the fierce clash, two JeM militants Fayaz Ahmad, alias Imran, and Abu Zuhaq, alias Zafran Bhai, were killed. Two AK rifles and other arms and ammunition were seized from the slain militants.

Security forces arrested a militant along with 52 kg deadly RDX, two UBGL shells and two grenades at Noorbagh in the downtown city last night.

The explosive was enough to make more than 10 powerful improvised explosive devices to cause large-scale blasts on or before the Republic Day function.

People at Kreeri Pattan took to streets this morning to protest against the alleged atrocities by the special operation group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir police.

Raising slogans against the coalition government for misleading the people about the disbanding of the SOG, the demonstration blocked traffic for several hours.

Report on temples’ management soon
M.L. Kak

Jammu, January 13
A team of 16 members of the Kashmir legislature, that completed its tour of Nepal, will submit a report on the management of monastries and temples to the state government.

Official sources said the report of the committee would form the basis for the proposed amendment to the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Act.

During the recently concluded special session of the state legislature, the government had sought permission for submitting the report of the select committee to which the Bill seeking amendment to the Shrine Board Act had been sent in the next session.

The committee members visited various monastries and temples in Nepal where they studied the functioning and the responsibilities of the boards looking after these shrines and the role of monks and baridars.

The erstwhile National Conference Government had proposed an amendment to the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Act in order to allow baridars a bigger role in the management of the pilgrim traffic and in sharing the offerings made by the pilgrims. The Bill could not be adopted.

Though the amendment, under consideration of the House, has been moved by a private member the government is keen to study and examine all pros and cons of the proposal before tabling it for adoption during the ensuing budget session of the state legislature.

After the adoption of the Shrine Board Act in 1987, the baridars was kept out of the management of the shrine and a fixed amount paid to them by way of compensation.

Most baridars have refused to accept compensation and during the past 16 years waged a legal and political fight for the restoration of their right to have a say in the management of the pilgrim traffic.
