Snow in hills, shower in plains

Chandigarh, December 10
The upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, including the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, received fresh snowfall today while the plains of Punjab and Haryana were lashed by light rains, thus ending the long dry spell.

Gulmarg (7 cm), Banihal Top (5 cm), Haddan Taj (23 cm), Siachen area (8-12 cm), and Kanzalwan (3 cm) in the Gurez sector were covered by a thick white blanket this morning, Meteorolgical Department sources said here.

Srinagar (8.9 mm) and Jammu (13.7 mm) were lashed by rains.

Dhundi (14 cm) and Patsio (2 cm) in Himachal Pradesh received snow while the areas to be lashed by rains included Shimla (12.6 mm), Sundernagar (3.5 mm), Manali (17 mm), Solang Nullah (9.3 mm), Bhuntar (12 mm), Pandhoh (2 mm), Sujanpur Thria (7.8 mm), Guler (11.3 mm), Nagrota Surien (2.7 mm) and Kasol (4.6 mm). Chandigarh, Ambala, Hisar and Kurukshetra were also lashed by light rains.

In Punjab, Patiala, Ropar and the Nangal Dam area had rains.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperatures in the region witnessed an increase by a few degrees and people got some respite from the cold conditions that had prevailed for the past few days.

Chandigarh at 13.2° C was up by four degrees while Ambala at a low of 11.7 °C was also up by four. Srinagar at a low of 6 °C was plus eight, Jammu at 13.7 °C was up by four, Amritsar at 9.2 C° was plus three, Ludhiana at 12.3°C plus five, Patiala at 14.1 ° C was six above normal. — PTI
