Sri Lankan Army chief visits Kashmir

The Sri Lankan army chief Lieutenant-General L.P. Balagalle here today said hope had been generated following the ceasefire along the borders between India and Pakistan.

Talking to mediapersons at the end of his day-long visit at the Badami Bagh Cantt here this afternoon Lieut-Gen Balagalle said there was definitely a difference in the situation along the borders between the two countries following the ceasefire. This had been clear to him during his discussion with the Army officers during the day-long visit to Kashmir.

Earlier in the day, the Sri Lankan Army chief visited headquarters of formations in forward areas and held discussions with the Army officers on current situation of ceasefire on the LoC and AGPL. Lieut-Gen Balagalle also held discussions with the formation commanders about the results of the latest developments.

Replying to questions, Lieut-Gen Balagalle said the situation in his country was conducive enough for his visit abroad though there was temporary suspension of peace talks. He said the Sri Lankan Army was of the view that peace talks with the rebels in the country could be possible when there was a ceasefire.

He was received at the Headquarters of 15 Corps by Lieut-Gen Nirbhay Sharma, GOC 15 Corps. Lieut-Gen Balagalle was accompanied by his wife Mrs Gnana and son Captain Lakmal, who is presently serving in the regiment of artillery as a young officer and deployed in Jaffna.
