China not to screen Indians for dengue

Beijing, November 28
China has lifted the order of mandatory screening of all passengers coming from India for dengue fever, official sources said here today.

China has lifted with immediate effect the mandatory screening of passengers from India for dengue fever, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of India, Mr Debnath Shaw, said.

Following some 30 deaths in New Delhi and surrounding areas due to dengue, China, which is on high alert against the recurrence of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), had enforced the mandatory screening of passengers from India from November 12.

Under this, any person from India, entering China with symptoms of high fever, body-ache and rashes, had to be quarantined and cargo checked for mosquito breeding.

Mr Shaw said the Indian Embassy had taken up the matter with Chinese departments concerned and pointed out that no country had imposed any travel restrictions on a account of the seasonal reporting of dengue cases in Delhi and surrounding areas.

The embassy also assured Chinese authorities that there was “no risk whatsoever for international travel to and from Delhi and china.” — PTI
