EU hopes ceasefire will end infiltration
Tribune New Service

New Delhi, November 28
The European Union today hoped that the comprehensive India-Pakistan ceasefire would lead to an end of infiltration from across the border and a solution to the Kashmir issue.

EU External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten also said the “generous” healing touch adopted in Jammu and Kashmir was also a positive step.

“We are pleased with the confidence-building measures initiated by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee... We hope infiltration along the Line of Control will dry up,” Mr Patten remarked.

He also made a remark which would not be music to the ears of the Indian Government. He said the European Union was willing to offer any assistance to carry forward the Indo-Pak dialogue if India so desired. “The international community will oblige if India wants it to do so,” he added.

Mr Patten said he was well aware of the Indian stand of a firm “no” to any third-party mediation on the Kashmir issue. He stated as a person involved in the peace dialogue in Northern Ireland, he would not have liked any help from Indian authorities on the vexed issue. He also noted that he understood India’s position that the Indo-Pak issue should be resolved bilaterally.
