27 dead, 450 hurt in Istanbul blasts
British Consul-General among killed

Istanbul, November 20
Explosions hit the Turkish headquarters of the London-based HSBC bank and the British consulate today, killing at least 27 persons and wounding about 450, health officials said. The blasts came days after the city was hit by two synagogue bombings.

Paramilitary forces rushed to Assam

The Centre has dispatched paramilitary forces to Assam to assist the state government in restoring normalcy as tension ran high amid reports of continuing sporadic attacks against Biharis that claimed one more life today, taking the toll to 30 in the ethnic violence.

75 per cent turnout in Mizoram

The Election Commission today said the polling in Mizoram was by and large peaceful with 75 per cent of the electorate exercising franchise. The commission said it may order repolling in five stations in Suangpuilawn Assembly segment following reports of electoral malpractice.

A crucial general council meeting of the Hurriyat Conference to discuss the Centre’s offer of talks remained inconclusive today, even as dissident faction leaders continued to stay away. Any decisions taken at today’s meeting would be announced by Hurriyat leaders at Jama Masjid during Friday prayers here tomorrow.

Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has impressed upon the Centre to constitute a fresh tribunal at an early date for the distribution of Yamuna waters in its territory as the previous award has outlived the present-day realities.

As Akali stalwart, Gurcharan Singh Tohra was re-elected SGPC chief for the 27th term which is unprecedented in the 78-year-old history of the SGPC — considered ‘Mini Parliament’ of Sikhs. He could not ensure the election of his confidant Sukhdev Singh Bhaur as senior vice-president.
