75 per cent schoolgoers skip breakfast

FOOD continues to be a major factor in the development of the whole person — rather the personality — throughout growing years and the day starts with breakfast, which is increasingly being considered the most important meal of the day, especially, for breakfast shunning children below the age of 12.

The impact of missing breakfast among schoolgoing children through an emerging generation of scientific evidence demonstrates a direct link between inadequate breakfast and a variety of poor developmental outcomes coupled with a serious toll on health.

The matter for concern is that there has been a steady rise in the number of children missing breakfast from 1961 onwards. The figures show an alarming phenomena — an estimated 10 per cent of them missed breakfast in 1961 and by 1991 about 74.9 per cent children had started skipping breakfast.

Everybody, especially, primary school and even pre-adolescent students require nutrients and energy for concentration on their ever-increasing taxing academic tasks — particularly the ones which demand problem solving and creativity.

Breakfast has more important role as it has the potential to provide nutrients like proteins, essential fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins.

Glucose helps in generating better memory functions. It has also been documented that children with lower I:Q are even more negatively affected when breakfast is skipped. Various experiments with schoolgoing children across the globe observed that all children who had a balanced breakfast fared much better in all tests — psychological, speed, memory, computing, verbal, discriminatory, visual — than their counterparts who were given no breakfast at all.

Once breakfast has been missed, the child starts to feel the effects in the form of headache, fatigue, restlessness and sleepiness as the day progresses. These symptoms reach an alarming proportion by school break.

Students who miss breakfast for two-four days every week suffer from poor health, ear infections and iron deficiency and as a result have to miss more school days and are less prepared to learn when they attend school.

Psychological problems are often reported in such children. They are more aggressive, suffer from anxiety and have difficulty in getting along with classmates. The risk of permanent passivicity is greatly increased in such children.

During recent years, obesity and overweight have increasingly been reported in such children. The bodies of children, who skip breakfast on a regular or often basis, show “adavtive response to episodic food insufficiency” — meaning such children over-eat when food supplies are more abundant and are caught in this vicious circle almost forever.

The identifiable causes are early school hours, trying to catch up with home work in the morning, late rising, slow workers or distractions like TV and computers. It is recommended that children who are late risers or slow workers be woken up well in time for breakfast. All distractions should be strictly dealt with and with adequate motivation and reprimand a healthy routine can be set-up.

A healthy breakfast comprises of a cup of milk, chapati with vegetables or egg and bread or curd and fruit with various accompaniments like butter or margarine. Alternatives like corn flakes, cheese, cheese slices can be effectively used.

Missing breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day, can lead to serious health problems that can, individually or interactively, impede normal growth and development.

Permanent residence after studying in Australia
Bikkar S. Brar

Australia is one of the most preferred destinations for Indian students seeking to pursue quality higher education. The Australia visa system is quite favourable to genuine visa applicants who can meet the criteria for a particular category of visa.

The higher education system in Australia is an export industry with an annual income of over five billion dollars. Its growth rate in past 10 years has been phenomenal. Every fifth student in Australian universities is from overseas.

One of the recently changed visa criteria requires the visa applicant for permanent residence to successfully complete 24 months’ education course in Australia. However, one can come across many students in India seeking admission for higher education in Australia who are unaware of this change. Also, some students are enrolled in those courses which are neither in the migration occupation on demand list (MODL), nor in the skills list with an award of 60 points.

Those spending money on education in Australia for the sole aim of permanent residence must ensure before seeking admission to Australian educational institutions if a) The course they are enrolling in is either in the migration occupation on demand list (MODL) or in the skills list with award of 60 points, b) Duration of course is 24 months (recently changed from 12 months) and the skill and experience achieved after the course enable them to claim 60 points, c) The education provider has a good reputation, d) The campus is located at a place where 20 hours work is easily available when the session is on and more hours of work available during authorised vacations as per the visa conditions, e) The fee is comparable and cost of living reasonable, f) Campus location in less populated or designated areas may give advantage at the time of visa application, g) Initial sharing of accommodation with students from similar culture is possible for exchange of experience, finding of a part-time job and sharing of resources like transport, kitchen, laundry, telephone, computer/printer and the internet.

An onshore applicant for skilled category visa is required to obtain 115 pass marks to be eligible for consideration for grant of permanent residence visa. Pursuing a higher education course with 24 months duration in any skills with an award of 60 marks may be a great help to fulfil the dream of students for permanent residence.
