PDP leader among six killed

A People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and a jawan were among six persons killed in militancy-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir since last night, an official spokesman said here today.

The police said that Ghulam Mohammad Ganai of Frestabal, zonal president of the PDP, was fired upon at Drangabal near the highway township of Pampore, about 14 km from here. He received multiple bullet injuries and succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to the SMHS hospital here.

This is the second incident of the killing of a PDP leader since the formation of the multi-party coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir last year. A former PDP MLA of Pampore constituency, Abdul Aziz Mir, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in his nearby village last December, over two months after being elected.

A jawan was killed and four security personnel injured when militants opened fire on a security force party on way to Hari Mandi sector in Poonch district, he said.

Two Tehreekul Mjahideen UM Ultras, Abdul, Gani Bhatt alias Zubear and Mohammad Ashraf alias Parvez, were killed in an encounter with the security forces in the Banihal area of the Doda district, the spokesman said adding some arms and ammunition were seized from them.

The security forces shot dead a militant during an encounter at Maachipora last night. Identified as Feroze Ahmad Bhat, he owed his allegiance to J K Revolutionary Front, he said.

A youth was shot dead by the security forces when he approached the gate of their camp in Poonch town last night ignoring repeated calls by the Armymen to stop, official sources said. He was identified as Jehangir Hussian, an epilepsy patient.

Another civilian Irshad Ahmed, moving suspiciously near District Police Lines in Doda town was injured when the security forces opened fire at him last night. He has been hospitalised, they added.

The security forces busted two militant hide-outs in the Surankote area of Poonch district and the Kalakot area of Rajouri district and seized among other things one detonator, one UBGL, five UBGL grenades and one IED, the spokesman said.

An ultra of Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit surrendered before the security forces at Ganderbal, along with his weapons, which included a pistol and two magazines, he said.

In Budgam district, militants kidnapped Firdous Ahmad, son of Mohammad Abdullah Mir from his Beerwah residence last night. The ultras took away Firdous after his father refused to pay extortion money to them, he added.

Meanwhile, the security personnel gunned down three militants in Reasi area of Udhampur district last evening. The identity of the slain ultras was yet to be ascertained.
