10-yr RI for four in rape case

A fast track court has sentenced four accused, including two politicians, to 10 years imprisonment on the charges of abduction and raping a girl in March, 1999. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 each on the accused.

City crime graph goes up

Petty crime in the city, particularly thefts and cheating, is on the rise even though the city is being patrolled round-the-clock by policemen on nearly 150 motor cycles in three shifts each.

City to have two flyovers

DAV students call off strike

Rs 225 cr for water supply, sewerage facilities in state
Ludhiana, September 6
A comprehensive programme to provide water supply and sewerage facilities in all cities and towns in the state has been launched by the Punjab government at a cost of Rs 225 crore. During the first phase, an amount of Rs 145 crore has already been released to 43 municipal councils for different development projects.

CM ‘rejects’ demand to bring back ex-DC

The Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, is learned to have rejected the demand by a senior Congress leader and Member Parliament from Ludhiana to post back a former Deputy Commissioner here. The leader is learned to have even tried to use the influence of some AICC leaders to get the DC posted back here.

Christians living in Punjab have demanded that one of the members of their community be nominated to the Rajya Sabha, since they were not being adequately represented either in the state legislature or in Parliament.

One of the India's leading cricket commentator, Harsha Bhogle sees no wrong in women commentators doing commentary. He was in the city on Friday. He said if women commentators were good and acceptable to the viewers, their was nothing wrong in engaging them. He said this when he was asked to comment on Sony Television's move to engage TV artist Mandira Bedi for commentary during the last Cricket World Cup held early this year.

Cheques disbursed for development
Mandi Gobindgarh, September 6
Mr Sukhdev Singh, Rajya Sabha Member, laid the foundation stone of “pucca” prayer ground, to be built at a cost of Rs 2 lakh, at Government Girls Secondary School here today. Last year, he had presented a grant of Rs 2 lakh to the school for development works.

The government employees employed in villages should serve people honestly as most of the population in the country lived in villages, said Mr Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, MLA, at a function after the inauguration of Class XII school at Faizullapur village, near here, today.

Jagannath Rath Yatra
Ludhiana, September 6
Bhagwan Jagannath Rath Yatra took off to a delayed start from Durga Mata temple, near Jagraon bridge, here this afternoon. Devotees, largely comprising women, had assembled at the temple well before 2pm, when the yatra was scheduled to take off. Those who had made it to the venue in time had to wait in the hot and humid weather for more than two hours. Police was present in strength to provide security to the yatra. About 150 private security personnel hired by the ISKCON and the Bhagwan Jagannath Rath Yatra Mahotsav Committee that were also deployed.

4 booked for abetting suicide
Ludhiana, September 6
On the statement of Constable Gurminder Singh, who is attached as a gunman with Mr Jatinder Singh Khatra, DSP, Dakha, Jagraon, the Sarabha Nagar police yesterday registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC against Rachhpal Singh, Gurpal Singh and wife of late head constable Sohan Lal and her father.

Mehndi, embroidery contests at college
Ludhiana, September 6
Inter-class mehndi and embroidery competitions were organised by the Home Science Department of Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, Ludhiana, here on Thursday and Friday. Fifteen students participated in the mehndi competition, while 22 students displayed their creativity in the embroidery competition.
