Punjabi varsity teaching from Sept 5
Students block traffic at Bathinda

Punjabi University today decided to resume teaching work in a phased manner from September 5 with the opening of its University College of Engineering.

A meeting of senior functionaries of the university was called by the Vice-Chancellor, Mr Swaran Singh Boparai, to review the situation on the campus after students ended their indefinite dharna. It was decided that teaching and research work would be resumed in various departments in a phased manner.

The Departments of management, commerce, bio-technology, pharmacy, computer science, Sanskrit, music, dance, philosophy, religious studies, encyclopedia of Sikhism, correspondence courses, IAS Training Centre, Sri Guru Granth Sahib studies, Punjab historical Studies, Punjabi literary studies, Centre for Research in Economic Change and Punjabi Development will resume normal functioning from September 8.

The hostels for students of these departments will be opened on given dates and no outsider will be allowed to stay in these hostels. The ban on the consumption of intoxicants on the campus will be strictly enforced.

Meanwhile, the Sanjha Vidyarthi Front today organised protest rallies in Mohindra College, Modi College, Government College for Girls, Khalsa College, Government State College of Education, Government College of Physical Education, ITI, Patiala, and Bikram College. The front wants the university to reconsider action against 18 students. Harmandeep Singh Gill and Gurpal Singh Dhaliwal of the SFI, PSU’s Raminder Singh and ADSO activists Kirit Singh, Ajit Singh and Aman Khasla addressed the gathering.

Reports from Bathinda say hundreds of students of the Punjabi University Regional Centre, Government Rajindra College, ITI and Government Polytechnic College blocked traffic near the bus stand here today in protest against the “Anti-student” policy of the Punjab Government and the alleged dictatorial attitude of the Vice-Chancellor, of Punjabi University, Dr S.S. Boparai.
