More snowfall in J&K, HP areas
Our Correspondent and Agencies

Chandigarh, August 30
Higher altitudes in forward areas of Jammu and Kashmir and tribal belt of the Lahaul-Spiti valley in Himachal Pradesh experienced a renewed spell of snowfall as most of the north-west region had light to moderate rains in the past 24 hours.

The snowfall in the forward areas of Jammu and Kashmir was the third and in Himachal Pradesh second during the past one week. The rains right from Srinagar (5.5 mm) and Jammu (13.00 mm) to Delhi (3.1 mm) caused a sharp fall in temperatures.

Rain at this time of the year is considered very beneficial for the standing kharif crop, specially the paddy and fruit.

Chandigarh was again lashed by rain in the past 24 hours, while Ambala in Haryana also reported having received 17.3 mm of rainfall.

Shimla, which had recorded 21.9 mm of rainfall till this morning, was lashed by heavy showers in the afternoon, forcing the people, including tourists, to scurry for cover.

Heavy rains threw life out of gear in and around Hamirpur and Una. Heavy rainfall in the state was reported from Ghamrur (64.6 mm) and Guler (64.4 mm), followed by Nagrota Surian (22.4 mm), Sundernagar (15.3 mm), Pandoh (13.00 mm), Mandi (11.9 mm), Bhuntar (10.3 mm) and Nahan (9.2 mm). Barthin (6.00 mm), Sujanpur Thira (4.5 mm), Rl-1700 (5.00 mm) and Bhakra Dam area (5.8 mm) were among other Himachal stations reporting rains.

SHIMLA: The heavy rain caused numerous landslides in the interior areas, blocking the link roads. All rivers and streams were in spate and several low-lying areas had been flooded in the foothills.

Shimla and its surrounding areas were lashed by heavy rains during the past 24 hours and 25 mm of rain was recorded till this evening. The sky remained heavily overcast and thick fog enveloped the region, affecting the movement of vehicular traffic.

Reports of widespread rains were also received from Kasauli, Chail, Solan, Bilaspur, Kangra, Una, Hamirpur and some other parts of the state. The day temperature recorded a fall of three to four degrees.

HAMIRPUR: Various parts of the district have been having heavy showers since morning as a result the day temperature has fallen. Normal life has also been affected in the plains. The most affected have been college students who could not take out processions in view of their Students Central Association elections slated for September 2.

The farming community has, however, welcomed the showers claiming these to be beneficial for the further growth of their kharif crops.

Reports reaching here from interiors of the district say that road traffic on various roads has been paralysed due to the falling of huge debris on them. PWD workers have been pressed into service to clear the roads, a spokesman of the department said here on Saturday.
