Fire in shoe shops kills two
Ludhiana, August 26
Two persons were killed and five others were injured in two fires here and near Sahnewal late last night. Two shoe manufacturing shops near Clock Tower in the city caught fire late last night. A tanker loaded with a chemical was burnt in Dugri village near Sahnewal.

Couple gets 7-year-RI for killing woman
Ludhiana, August 26
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Baldev Singh Sodhi, has sentenced a couple, Rekha (40) and Parshotam (48) of Nali Mohalla, Deepak Cinema Road, to seven-year imprisonment each, on the charge of causing the death of Sudesh Rani.

Case registered against councillor, six others 
Mandi Ahmedgarh, August 26
The local police has registered a case against seven persons, including a councillor, for allegedly assaulting another councillor and his associates. However, the accused has denied the charges, alleging that he was attacked and persons from both sides were injured in a scuffle.

Beopar Mandal writes to Hanspal on exim forms
Ludhiana, August 26
Mr Tulsidas Jaitwani, president, Punjab Beopar Mandal, has urged the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Mr H.S. Hanspal to persuade the Punjab Government to postpone the introduction of exim forms till April 2004 so as to have proper consensus on the issue.

Preparations on for Beant Singh’s death anniversary

Preparations are in full swing in the town for observing the death anniversary of former chief minister Beant Singh on August 31. The main partition that divides the railway road has been done away with and is being replaced by a huge statue of the late Chief Minister, who had worked to establish a new Doraha and had worked for the cause of the residents of the town.

Decision on power consumption deposit modified
Ludhiana, August 26
Modifying its earlier decision, the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) has now decided that the Advance Consumption Deposit (ACD) at new rates would be applicable only for the extension of new loads. This was stated by Mr Y.S.Ratra, Chairman, PSEB, while addressing members of the Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry today.

Mumbai killings condemned
Ludhiana, August 26
Condemning yesterday’s twin explosions at Zaveri Bazaar and Gateway of India in Mumbai in which 46 people were killed and 200 were injured, the state unit of All India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) has called it a barbaric act.

Federation meets minister over steel price hike
Ludhiana, August 26
A deputation of the Federation of Tiny and Small Industries of India called upon Mr B.K. Tripathi, Steel Minister, and Mr J.P. Singh, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel, in New Delhi yesterday to apprise them of the situation arising from the steep hike in steel prices and the scarcity created by the five major producers of HR coils.

Regulation of contract labour sought
Ludhiana, August 26
Experts have recommended that the Indian law should provide for the regulation of contract labour and not its abolition. Speaking at a one-day seminar on “legal aspects of engaging contract labour-obligations of principal employer under various labour laws”, organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), here today, the experts said the practice of employing contract labour was prevalent in varying degrees in almost all industries and services, including the private sector, and the service cannot be done away with.

The Institute of Career Designing in Dentistry, Ludhiana (ICDD) held its sixth one-day certificate course on “cast partial dentures revisited”, here recently. The faculty of the course included a prosthodontist from Delhi, Dr Mahesh Verma, Principal, Dental College and Hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. He was assisted in deliberations by Dr Laxman Rao, senior resident of the same college.

Conjunctivitis causing shortage of eye drops
Ludhiana, August 26
The prevailing epidemic of conjunctivitis in the city has lead to a shortage of eye drops and medicines to cure the disease. Wholesale as well as retail dealers in the city have confirmed that excessive demand has lead to an acute shortage of eye drops. They said several of these eye drops contained, which could be harmful to eyes, yet those wanting immediate relief preferred these.

Emergency in corridor

Given the health infrastructure in the state, the situation here is not surprising. But keeping in mind the importance of the Civil Hospital, Khanna, that caters to the needs of thousands of people in and around the industrial town, functioning of the hospital emergency from a corridor is deplorable.

Awareness rally on dengue
Ludhiana, August 26
An awareness rally on dengue and malaria was flagged off from the Civil Surgeon's office here by Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner. The rally was organised by health workers and anti-larva employees of the district Health Department.

Scholarship for shuttler
Ludhiana, August 26
Gurbaksh Singh, a local badminton player has been given with a sports scholarship. Recognising Gurbaksh Singh's achievements at national-level tournaments, the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) has announced a scholarship for the year 2003-2004 for him.
