All arrangements for the smooth conduct of the district-level Independence Day function to be held at Government College for Boys have been completed and a final dress rehearsal was held here today in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Anurag Verma, SSP Narinder Pal Singh and other senior officers.

Hospitals normal

With the suspension of the ongoing strike by Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) doctors, patients as well as doctors have a sigh of relief. Doctors were seen attending to patients at Civil Hospitals and dispensaries after they were given an assurance by the state government that an expert committee would look into the matter of the non-practicing allowance and a better solution, which would be acceptable to both government and PCMS doctors would be provided within two weeks.

Secretary (Steel) to meet producers today

Responding to the widespread hue and cry across the country over the rising steel prices, the union Secretary, Steel, Mr V.K. Duggal, is learnt to have convened a meeting of five major steel producing companies tomorrow in Delhi to discuss the issue. Disclosing this here today, the president, Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr P.D. Sharma, said Mr Duggal was seized of the matter.

Financial Commissioner disappoints traders
Ludhiana, August 13
Trade and industry in Punjab are heading for a confrontation with the state government on the introduction of exim forms from September 1. Mr Tulsidas Jaitwani, president of the Punjab Beopar Mandal, who led a deputation of the trade and industry to meet the Financial Commissioner (taxation), Mr Mukul Joshi, and other senior officers of the Excise and Taxation Department.

Auction for octroi collection put off

The Deputy Director, Local Bodies, cancelled the auction for the collection of octroi in the municipal limits of Ahmedgarh as sufficient number of bidders did not turn up at Patiala today.

Developing 5 villages into towns
Amloh, August 13
The Punjab Government has received 25 per cent of the grant out of Rs 283 crore for the development of villages, while Fatehgarh district has received Rs 4.9 crore to be spent on two villages in each block. Five villages in the Amloh block have been selected for urban facilities, Mr Jasjit Singh Randhawa, Minister for Public Health, Rural Development and Panchayats, said while taking to mediapersons here today.

60,000 saplings to be planted in city
Ludhiana, August 13
Under ‘‘Greening of Cities’’ project the Municipal Corporation has launched a massive plantation drive in the district. In the course of the ongoing campaign more than 60,000 saplings would be planted in different parts of the city out of which over 24,000 would be planted in Zone D, followed by around 20,000 in Zone B, almost 10,000 in Zone C and 7,500 in Zone A of the city.

The rural unit of the District Congress Committee (DCC) today took out the Kranti Jyoti march in memory of the martyrs and freedom fighters who lost their lives while fighting for the country’s freedom. The march was led by the DCC (rural) president, Mr Harmohinder Singh Pradhan.

Repression of employees decried
Ludhiana, August 13

Drug peddler nabbed, 900 gm charas seized
Ludhiana, August 13
A drug peddler operating from near the railway lines in Shahi Mohalla was nabbed yesterday by the police as 900 gm of contraband charas was allegedly seized from his possession. Bhagwan Dass, the accused, has been booked under sections 20, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act at the division number 8 police station.

Five rabi crops to be sown on contract
Ludhiana, August 13
The Punjab Government has decided to sow five rabi crops under contract farming in the forthcoming season. These will include durum wheat, hyola, gram, peas and sunflower in 1.65 lakh hectares.

PAU employees hold rally

Members of the Punjab Agricultural University Employees Union and the PAU Class IV Workers Union held a rally here today. They burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister and demanded that all “anti-employees” policies should be withdrawn.

Teachers observe strike
Ludhiana, August 13
The Colleges of Ludhiana, Khanna, Samrala, Doraha, Sudhar, Dakha, Narangwal, Raikot , Jagraon and the Arya College Teachers’ Unit(ACTU) observed a two-period strike in response to a strike call given by the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union(PCCTU).

Jaghera's  judicial remand extended

Mr Jasbir Singh, Judicial Magistrate (First Class) , today again extended the remand of Shamsher Singh Jaghera, president, International Sant Samaj, till August 27. He has been charged in a rape case and has still not filed any bail application.
