New Delhi, July 20
Pakistan Opposition leader Fazal-ur-Rahman said today that Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee would visit Pakistan for the SAARC Summit in January next.

Maulana Rahman, who met the Prime Minister for about 90 minutes today, told reporters later that talks between senior officials of the two countries would be held before Mr Vajpayee’s visit. Maulana Rahman, chief of the hardline Jamiat-Ulema Islam, said Mr Vajpayee was determined to carry forward his Srinagar peace initiative and hoped that it would reach its logical conclusion.

He said he would convey the peace initiative of Mr Vajpayee to the people of his country and work for its success.

“Mr Vajpayee confirmed to us that he would visit Pakistan for the SAARC Summit. He also made it clear that secretary-level talks should be held before that,” he said. He asserted that dialogue was the only way to resolve problems between India and Pakistan.
