Steam engine to be back on Kalka track

Shimla, July 19
The vintage steam engine will be back on the Shimla-Kalka narrow gauge after three decades as a tourist attraction from November when the track completes 100 years.

The decision to ply vintage steam engine train between Shimla and Kaithleeghat was taken here today at a high-level meeting held under the chairmanship of Major Vijay Mankotia, Tourism Minister, to finalise the programme for the centenary celebrations, here today.

The inaugural train will run on November 9, 2003 and it will be made a weekly affair.

On the same day a postage stamp to commemorate the 100 years of the track will also be released on the rail track with focus on conserving and further improving the section.

Efforts will be made to secure the world heritage status for the rail section.

While some stations like Shimla, Summer Hill, Barog and Dharampur will be transformed into living museums, others will be given a face-lift.

At least five souvenirs, symbolic of the Kalka-Shimla track, will be made and sold at various locations.

Other activities include painting and essay competition for children, honouring of the retired railways staff and setting up of an art gallery in Shimla.
