chief taken into custody Srinagar, July 18 Official sources said a group of people led by Mr Untoo held a demonstration in front of the JKHRF office in protest against the alleged attrocities by the security forces and the police on civilians. However, when they tried to move towards Maulana Azad Road, the police took them into preventive custody. Mr Untoo said the PDP-led coalition government had failed to check human rights violations in the state. He alleged that custodial disappearance and killing in fake encounters, besides other atrocities, were going un-checked. Despite the government’s claims that the Special Operation Group (SOG) had been disbanded, personnel associated with the force were still operating in the valley, Mr Untoo said. The JKHRF chief said the government had failed to implement the Supreme Court orders which stated that relatives of a detainee must be informed within 24 hours after his or her arrest. —
