Muslim on Amarnath yatra for thanksgiving

Baltal (Jammu), July 15
Trudging a long narrow rocky path, Sarwer Ahmed joined the endless stream of pilgrims, heading towards the holy cave shrine of Lord Shiva at Amarnath in south Kashmir after he completely recovered from paralysis after remaining bedridden for 14 years.

Dressed in a dhoti and chanting “Jai bhole nath, jai Shiv Shankar”, the middle class Muslim businessman, Ahmed and his wife Abida were part of first batch of piligrims to pay obeisance at the holy ice lingam of Lord Shiva.

Hailing from Bongaigaon district in the Northeast, long bearded Ahmed’s wish to be cured of paralysis was fulfilled by the grace of Lord Shiva after 14 long years of medical treatment costing around Rs 7 to 8 lakh.

“I am happy that Lord Shiva had cured my husband after we rubbed on his forehead ash from the Amarnath cave brought by a family friend last year”, Ahmed’s wife Abida told PTI.

“Ahmed was normal after this exercise, and his two legs and right arm, which had been paralysed since 1988, started working well”, she said adding “It was the miracle of ‘Bhole Baba’ for us as well as for doctors, who had lost all hope of a cure for him.”

As per the prayer, the couple say they would visit Amarnath every year.

“We had prayed to God that if Ahmed was fully cured from paralysis, we would visit Amarnath every year and this is our first time”, Abida said.

Like Ahmed and Abida a Punjabi NRI couple Satinder Kaur and Gurpreet Singh who had got married 16 years ago and were settled in California had come to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva for their three-month-old baby, who they believe is a “gift from Lord Shiva”. “We had visited Amarnath seeking a child. Now we have a baby boy born to us after 16 years due to the blessing of Amarnath baba”, they said.Hundreds of Muslims, Sikhs, Christians are part of this Hindu pilgrimage year after year in pursuit of fulfilment of their wishes, he added. — PTI
