VHP’s Raipur meeting to discuss temple issue
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 24
The three-day meeting of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, scheduled to begin from June 26 at Raipur, will not only decide the future course of action on the Ramjanmabhoomi temple issue but will also condemn “official” attempts to divide the movement.

The meeting’s proceedings, recommendations and resolutions assume significance in the light of recent VHP’s criticism of the Vajapyee government-backed initiative of Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati on the Ayohdya issue.

While VHP senior leader Ashok Singhal went to Kanchi on Sunday last to elicit the seer’s view and approach, other leaders of the organisation, which has been spearheading the Ramjanmabhoomi movement, like Acharya Giriraj Kishore and Praveen Bhai Togadia have already been critical of the Shankaracharya’s initiative.

The VHP leaders, particularly Mr Singhal and Dr Togadia, who have been nursing a feeling of “hurt” and “neglect” for sometime now, are said to be agitated over Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s line of thinking and course of action on the Ayodhya issue.

The bi-annual meeting of the VHP working committee being held in Chhattisgarh, where Assembly elections are due in a few months from now, will not only undertake a review of the activities of the organisation in the past six months but will also criticise the government.

The meeting will be attended by about 100 members, including the 51 working committee members and special invitees.

Though official sources deny that the government had ever thought of sidelining the Rashtriya Swyamsevak Sangh’s leading organisation that succeeded in uniting the different Hindu sects behind the Janmabhoomi movement at Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura, the VHP leaders are said to be convinced that the NDA government is all out to strike a deal on Ram Temple by giving up the cause of Kashi and Mathura.

The government would definitely bring the VHP in the process of negotiations when views of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board and other Islamic leaders were known and a possibility of a solution to the vexed problem was in sight, the sources pointed out.

Armed with the support of the working committee, the VHP leaders will proceed to Kanyakumari where a two-day meeting with the top RSS leaders is being held from July 5.

At Kanyakumari, the RSS is going to extend full support to the VHP’s plan of action and will criticise attempts to ignore the parishad.

Krishna meets Kalam, Advani over Cauvery
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 24
The river water dispute between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh has put a question mark on the ambitious national river-water-linking project proposed by the NDA government.

Irked by the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s alleged remarks urging the people of the state to stop the construction of Paragodu Tank by Karnataka, the state Chief Minister, Mr S.M. Krishna, led an all-party delegation to the President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L.K. Advani today.

At a press conference later, Mr Krishna said the barrage across the Chitravathi rivulet was only aimed at arranging drinking water for 88 villages and two urban centres of Gudibanda and Bagepalli in Kolar, in one of the worst drought-affected regions.

His visit to New Delhi comes in the wake of a similar visit by an Andhra Pradesh delegation led by the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The dispute between the two southern states has brought out the question of rights of upper and lower Riparian states.

The multi-crore national river-water project is aimed at linking the major rivers in the country in a move to carry surplus water to the deficit regions. However, disputes like the SYL, Cauvery, Krishna and the objections raised by environmentalists make the efforts of the project force set up by the Prime Minister a daunting task.

Non-Cong Opposition opposes troops to Iraq
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 24
The non-Congress Opposition parties today asked the Centre to clearly declare that India would not be part of the American occupation in Iraq saying that sending troops would not only “amount to total subservience to the US military” but would also be an infringement on Parliamentary privilege.

A joint statement signed by Left parties, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (S) and Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party warned the government against engaging with the US Administration over the possibility of sending Indian troops to Iraq saying that two resolutions passed by Parliament had called upon the UN to ensure that reconstruction was done under its auspices.

Condemning the presence of Pentagon officials in the country, Mr Basu, a Rajya Sabha MP, said deviating from the resolution would mean infringing on Parliamentary privilege.

He supported the Congress stand that the troops be sent only under the UN auspices saying that it was in line with the national consensus and resolutions adopted in Parliament.

Among the signatories to the statement were former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, Mr Somnath Chatterjee and Dr Raghuvansh Prasad Singh.

Stop initiative, saints ask Kanchi Shankaracharya

Ayodhya, June 24
A meeting of pro-VHP saints today adopted a resolution asking the Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati to stop his efforts to broker a solution to the Ayodhya issue, saying that none of the saints and groups spearheading the temple movement was taken into confidence before the start of his initiative.

The meeting here was presided over by Jagadguru Purushottamacharya, a senior member of the VHP’s Margdarshak Mandal.

The resolution said some bargaining seemed to be going on between the government, the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board and the Shankaracharya, and it was learnt that the old places of worship and the mosque were to be offered to the Muslims, which were under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Some other proposals to offer financial aid to Muslim madarsas and reservation to Muslims in government jobs were also there, the resolution claimed.

NEW DELHI: The BJP said on Tuesday that it was confident that the Ayodhya issue would be resolved amicably by July 6 following the meeting between the Kanchi Shankaracharya and Muslim leaders.

The party, however, remained non-committal on the Kashi and Mathura issues, saying that it would express its views on these only after July 6.

Party spokesman Prakash Jawadekar said as of now “we are very hopeful about the positive outcome in regard to the Ayodhya issue on July 6. We don’t want to say anything on Kashi and Mathura at present.”

LUCKNOW: The All-India Muslim Personal Law Board was “unanimous” in its decision to consider with an “open mind” the Kanchi Seer Jayendra Saraswati’s proposals to resolve the Ayodhya tangle.

“There is no difference of opinion among the members of the board with regard to considering the Kanchi seer’s proposals,” board spokesman Maulana Sajjad Nomani said on Tuesday. — PTI, UNITop

BSP wins Chiraigaon byelection

Varanasi, June 24
The Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) Virendra Singh has defeated his nearest rival Anil Rajbhar of the Samajwadi Party (SP) by 3,241 votes to win the Chiraigaon Assembly byelection.

The BSP wrested the seat from the SP whose Ramjit Rajbhar’s death had necessitated the bypoll, held on June 21 last.

A total of 40,503 votes were cast at Chiraigaon, out of which Mr Virendra Singh polled 55,527 while Mr Rajbhar polled 52,286 votes.

The Congress was virtually knocked out of the competition and its candidate Harishankar Singh merely polled 6,057 votes and had to lose his security along with 17 other candidates. The Apna Dal’s Gajanand Kushwaha, however, polled 14,517 votes and managed to save his security.

Mr Singh attributed his victory to the policies of Chief Minister Mayawati and said the people were fed up with the politics of caste and money power.

On losing the election, Mr Rajbhar attributed his loss to the alleged bungling and misuse of the official machinery. SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav had addressed six public meetings for this bypoll while Ms Mayawati had addressed just one meeting.
