7-year jail term for ISI agent

The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mandi, Mr Ravinder Kumar Verma, convicted Syed Khushnud Anwar Naqvi, resident of Bajwa Colony, Patiala, for espionage under Section 3 of the Official Secrets Act and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for seven years today.

Naqvi was nabbed by the police on January 25, 2001 at Luxami Narayan Temple, BBMB Colony, here. The police was carrying out checks at various places here in connection with the Himachal Day function and during the checks an unclaimed baggage was found in the temple sarai. The police after getting suspicious took the baggage into its possession and when Naqvi came to the temple he was nabbed as certain incriminating documents relating to Army positions, units, sketch of a unit, monographs and copies of E-mail printout, were found from him. On investigation, it was revealed that Naqvi had been spying for the Inter State Intelligence (ISI). He visited Pakistan twice and used to send messages through E-mail regarding the defence of India and received Rs 14,500 for it.

The police registered a case under Section 3 and 4 of the Official Secrets Act, read with the Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code vide FIR No. 35/2001 and arrested Naqvi.

The court in its 35-page judgement hold Naqvi guilty under Section 3 of the Official Secrets Act and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for seven years.
