BJP unfazed, says Congress plan won’t work
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 31
Even as the BJP on Saturday dismissed as “daydreaming” the proposed “grand alliance” between the Congress, the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal to oust the BSP-BJP Government in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress asserted that the days of the Mayawati government were numbered.

“The Opposition is desperate and frustrated over its failure to oust the Mayawati government. Hence, they are indulging in daydreams. All their past attempts have failed, so will it be in future,” BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told newspersons here.

Asserting that the coalition government in the state would complete its tenure, Mr Naqvi asked the Opposition to abide by the people’s mandate to sit in the Opposition and play a constructive role.

Meanwhile, Mr Jagadambika Pal, who was recently made the UPCC president, asserted that the days of the Mayawati government were numbered.

“Not only are the people of Uttar Pradesh frustrated and dejected with the Mayawati government, a sizeable number of legislators belonging to the BJP are also frustrated and are looking for an opportunity to get rid of the regime,” Mr Pal told The Tribune here.

“Morally they (BSP and BJP) should have resigned the moment Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) led by Ajit Singh (having 14 MLAs) withdrew support as after the exit of the RLD, the Mayawati government enjoys only an illusionary majority,” Mr Jagadambika Pal said.

Asked whether the Opposition parties would be able to dislodge the Mayawati government and establish an alternative government, the UPCC president said: “You wait and watch.”
