Cop kills son, wife, himself

Mumbai, May 25
An Assistant Inspector of Police today shot dead his wife and seriously injured his son and later committed suicide by shooting himself in his flat at Chembur here, the police said.

The 39-year-old API Prashant Sawant locked his bedroom around 8 am and opened fire at his 34-year-old wife Jayashree and nine-year-old son Pranesh, and then shot himself in his Gulmarg Cooperative Housing Society flat, they said.

While Jayashree died on the spot, API Sawant succumbed to his injuries on his way to the hospital.

A suicide note, recovered from Sawant, indicated he was in a state of depression which prompted him to take the extreme step, the police added.

However, his parents, who were in the adjoining room, were not harmed.

Meanwhile, critically-injured son of the API has succumbed to bullet wounds at the city hospital.

Hospital sources have confirmed the death of nine-year-old Pranesh Sawant who was brought in a critical condition.

Residents of the society had alerted the police when they heard gunshots at 9 am.

According to the Joint Commissioner of police, Mr Javed Ahmed, API had no problems with his family or the police department. Sawant decided to kill his wife and son along as he feared that they would not be properly looked after his death.

He said the real reason, if otherwise than stated in the note, could only be established after the completion of investigation. PTI, UNI
