After compiling Guru Granth Sahib, 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh, accorded the status of “Guru-ki-Kashi” to this town situated on the southern tip of the Thar desert. Eight lecturers for eight students
Ropar, May 15
The vicinity of Chandigarh has made Government Senior Secondary School at Khizrabad village in Ropar district as favourite posting place of influential teachers. Eight lecturers have been posted in the school for eight students.

Dharna by SAD, BJP workers
Sangrur, March 15
Activists of the BJP, the SAD, and residents of the town today staged a dharna at the Pheruman Chowk here to protest against the assault on Mr Nanak Chand Kalra, former chairman of the Sangrur Improvement Trust, and his son Jatinder Kalra, a BJP Municipal Councillor and demanded the arrest of the remaining four accused.

Punjab issues taken up with BJP top brass

There is a fresh move to get various issues pertaining to Punjab resolved before the Lok Sabha elections. Among the issues are the transfer of Chandigarh, distribution of river waters between Punjab and Haryana, removal of more names from the blacklist and return of the Sikh reference library material allegedly taken away by the Army after “Operation Bluestar”.

3 Dalit panches resign
Sangrur, May 15
Three Dalit panches of Hasanpur gram panchayat (near Dhuri) yesterday submitted their resignations to the Dhuri BDPO to protest against the alleged “auction” of village land on which Dalits had “roorris” (heaps of garbage) and “guharas” (heaps of cowdung cakes).

Advance payment of power bills scheme from today

The Punjab government has released Rs 176 crore to improve transmission, replacement of traditional meters with electronic meters and replacement of service lines etc under the Accelerated Power Development Reforms scheme of the Punjab State Electricity Board. 

PSEB to give 8-hr supply to farmers
Patiala, May 15
The Punjab State Electricity Board had decided to provide a minimum of eight hours of uninterrupted power supply for agricultural pump sets in the state from June 10.

Immolation threat by ’84 riot victims
Amritsar, May 15
Even as victims of the Delhi riots today decided to commit en masse immolation on June 3 in front of the official residence of the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, in Chandigarh, Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti, Jathedar, Akal Takht, totally disapproved of the idea on the ground that the ‘gurmat’ did not allow such misadventures.

Panchayats to get NOCs on funds

No objection certificates regarding the utilisation, or partial utilisation, of funds for development work would be issued to the gram panchayats at least a week before June 16, the date on which the process of holding elections was scheduled to begin — counsel for the state of Punjab today told the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Manjeet Singh Dalla of Dalla village under the Dinanagar telephone exchange in this district deposited security of Rs 500/- with Dinanagar Telephone Exchange for a telephone connection on February 27, 2002 but a telephone has not been installed at his place so far. He has received a bill for Rs 1227/- to be paid by May 8.

18-cr distillery project hangs fire
Pathankot, May 15
The Rs 18 crore distillery project, the first industrial project in South-Asia which was started by Pioneer Industries Limited at the industrial growth centre here, has been hanging fire. The centre has the dubious distinction of perhaps being the most ill-maintained industrial growth centre in Punjab.

2 hurt in mishaps

DC warns erring officials

Deputy Commissioner of Patiala Tajveer Singh yesterday said strict disciplinary action would be taken against any kanungo or patwari who displayed laxity in conducting “nishandehi” proceedings of land on request in the district.

DC suspends patwari
Ferozepore, May 15
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Raminder Singh, has suspended Mr Harmohinder Singh, patwari, posted at Mallanwala village, for tampering with an official record. The DC has also ordered a departmental inquiry against Mr Kewal Singh kanungo, which will be conducted by the tehsildar, Zira.

Proclaimed offender held
Hoshiarpur, May 15

The Mahilpur police last night, arrested Randhir Singh alias Dhira a proclaimed offender of Balaspur, wanted in several cases of looting, attempt to murder etc. Ms Gurpreet Deo Senior Superintendent of Police in a press note here yesterday said that Randhir Singh was wanted by Anandpur Sahib Police in case No. 12 of February 10, 2000, registered under Section 307/34 of the IPC against him.

Uncle held for beating up girl
Ropar, May 15
A 12-year-old orphaned girl, Mamta, was beaten up with screw driver, iron rod and hammer by her paternal uncle Gurcharan Singh. The incident took place at the residence of Gurcharan Singh in Behrampur Bet near Chamkaur Sahib on May 11. 

Groom, father held in dowry case

A bridegroom and his father were arrested at Dhariwal, near here, yesterday after the bride refused to accompany the marriage party on the plea that the bridegroom had demanded a car in dowry.

Mahant’s murder solved
Jeep fished out of canal

The murder of Mahant Nirmal Muni, whose Uadasin dera owned of nearly 900 acres at Akar village in Rajpura subdivision, has been solved with the police claiming that the murder had been committed by the Mahant’s disciple Pathardas in league with villagers, who had been ploughing the dera’s land on lease.

DEO(E) in soup over spending govt fund
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 15
The District Education Officer (Elementary) is in soup as she on her own has spent Rs. 2.21 crore provided under Sarv Siksha Abhiyan without the formal approval of the District Education Development Committee headed by the Deputy Commissioner. When the committee sought an explanation from the DEO(E), instead of explaining her position she proceeded on medical leave for a month.

Encyclopaedia of Sikhism on university net

Punjabi University has decided to put the Encyclopaedia of Sikhism on the university net. A university note said here today the decision had been taken at a meeting of the Standing Committee for Punjabi Development which was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Swaran Singh Boparai.

PG medical entrance exam on June 3
