A-I cancels 5 flights

Mumbai, April 25
Air India today cancelled five flights from here following an agitation by the pilots’ union.

The flights cancelled are Dubai (A-I 713), Delhi-London (A-I 129), Delhi-Hong Kong (A-I 310), Chennai-Singapore (A-I 472) and Kuwait (A-I 859), according to an AI official.

The airline is working out a contingency plan following the agitation by the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) which is demanding a certificate from the airlines that the accompanying crew have not flown into SARS-affected region for the past 10 days.

An AI spokesman said the flights to the USA via London and Paris by Boeing 747-400 were being operated behind schedule.

A few A310 flights had been affected because of the non-availability of the executive crew, he added.

AHMEDABAD: One person suspected of having SARS has been admitted to the Bhavnagar Civil Hospital, about 200 km from here.

The case is still being investigated since no government medical team has yet confirmed the nature of his disease.

Two suspected cases of SARS have also been reported in Kerala, CPM member V. Radhakrishnan said in the Lok Sabha today, as per a report from New Delhi.

Raising the issue during zero hour, he sought assistance from the Centre to the Kerala Government to deal with such cases.

In West Bengal, a “mysterious disease” has claimed two lives and affected 73 others at Batuknathpur village in Murshidabad district, a senior official has said.

“Cases have been reported from Batuknathpur in the last two days with victims complaining of uneasiness,” District Magistrate Manoj Panth said.

A medical team from Berhampur, headed by the Chief Medical Officer, has rushed to the village.

Meanwhile, with the number of SARS cases rising in east Asian countries, a state-sponsored organisation of flower merchants in the city has been asked to put on hold export of a flower consignment to Singapore. PTI
