Nationwide anti-war protests held
New Delhi, March 23 In Jaipur, nearly 3,000 persons waving anti-US placards and banners participated in an anti-war protest organised by the Rajasthan Muslim Forum, the People’s Union for Civil Liberties and over 10 other organisations. The agitationists prayed for the safety of Iraqis, pledged to boycott US goods and threatened to launch protests against US multinational companies in India. In Kolkata, lambasting the “unprovoked attack” on Iraq by the joint forces of the USA and Britain Left Front Chairman Biman Basu announced that an anti-war convention would be held in the city on March 25 to protest against the killing of innocent civilians. The Bharatiya Rationalist Association in Kochi applauded the stand of the Vatican and Pope John Paul II against the US military operation. In Tirupati, more than 150 anti-war protestors from all political parties, barring the ruling TDP, took out a procession carrying placards condemning the US-led war on Iraq. Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party chief Prof Bhim Singh urged the youth to boycott US soft drinks to register their protest on record against the aggression on Iraq. In Bihar too, anti-war demonstrations denouncing the US-strike continued in Patna. In Ongole in Andhra Pradesh, too, the outlawed CPI (ML-People’s War) called for a two-day protest beginning today against the US war against Iraq.
