New Delhi, March 21
A feeling has begun to grow within a section of the BJP that there was no point in continuing with the BSP in Uttar Pradesh as the party is suffering electorally and the state is slipping on the developmental parameters.

Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has left the issue of BJP-BSP coalition in the country's biggest state in the hands of Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani and party President M. Venkaiah Naidu. According to sources, resentment against the style of functioning and nature of governance of Chief Minister Mayawati in the state leaders and party workers is beginning to acquire threatening dimensions.

Power is missing, roads are bad, industry is stagnating and with little hope of an early recovery, the BJP is being blamed for this state of affairs, feel a large section of the party members in the state.

The BJP is increasingly becoming unpopular even among the traditional supporters of the party and this is causing worry but the state is heading towards ruins, said a leader, who has followed the party's relationship with the BSP from 1995.

Ideally, the state should be brought under President's rule so that a systematic effort could be made to restore administration and governance, a leader observed.

If the Congress agrees, the state could be brought under Central rule and then Assembly elections could be held with the Lok Sabha poll, he observed.

UAE may deport more ultras: Advani
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 21
The UAE could deport more terrorists and criminals under its custody, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishan Advani indicated here today.

Speaking to reporters on the sideline of the biennial conference of Civil Defence and Home Guards, Mr Advani, when asked whether deportation of more accused persons was on the cards, said, “I cannot say that, but efforts are on to contact the UAE authorities in this regard.”

Musatafa Dossa, main accused in the Mumbai serial blast case, is the eighth person to be deported by the UAE in recent months.

The deportation of terrorists and criminals from the UAE would help curb the practice of the accused fleeing to the Emirates and Pakistan, Mr Advani said.

Terming as “positive” the UAE’s cooperation with India in fighting terrorism, the Deputy Prime Minister thanked the authorities in the Gulf state for heeding to India’s request for the deportation of terrorists and criminals although they had Pakistani passports and claimed to be Pakistani nationals.

Asked about the deportation of Abu Salem, the Union Home Minister said, “We are hopeful that once his trial in Portugal ends, he will be handed over to India.”

Earlier, addressing the conference, Mr Advani said, “We have reached a stage where the government and the people can and have to work together for security and development.”

“After Independence, for a long time we have believed that national security is the responsibility of the government and the administration alone,” he said.

Security cannot be handled by the administrative machinery and Army alone, the Deputy Prime Minister said and emphasised that people’s involvement was essential for security and development.

Referring to the transfer of the Disaster Management Department from the Agriculture Ministry to the Home Ministry, he said Civil Defence and Home Guards could play an important role in disaster management also and disaster management could be included in the Civil Defence Act.
